Fran has covered hockey at all levels, NHL, AHL, junior, college and high school for the Springfield Republican from 1978-2013. His column "Hockey Talk'' appeared in the Sunday Republican. The hockey beat took him from Maine to Arizona in the United States and from Newfoundland to Alberta in Canada. Fran was the recipient of the Matthew Ryan Award for Outstanding Coverage of High School Hockey and the Janet McCormick Award from the Springfield Olympics. He then shifted from pros to college when the University of Massachusetts restored its program and joined Hockey East. Later, he continued covering the Boston Bruins and the Springfield Falcons. Fran's covered future NHL players from Western Massachusetts in Paul Fenton, Bob Kudelski, Rick Bennett and Bill Guerin. He is a member of the Bessone Award committee, which helps select the top high school hockey player in Western Mass. Fran was a goalie for Holyoke Community College in 1973-74 and graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 1977. Fran is currently a free lance writer living in Bondsville, Mass and grew up in Chicopee, Mass, has visited all 50 states, and is an avid photographer.

* Jake Delisle scored a pair of goals as reigning champion Easthampton defeated South Hadley, 5-1. in a Western Massachusetts Division 3A quarterfinal. N0. 5 Easthampton (11-7-3) will meet No. 1 Amherst (16-4-0) in Saturday’s semifinal. Amherst drew a first-round bye. Jake Batcheldor, Ely Boyle and Christopher Tenczar added one goal apiece for the Eagles. Tenczar also set up two goals. N0. 4 South Hadley, which closed, 13-6-2, got one goal from Sean Doherty.

* Freshman Andrew Fijal made his first playoff game a memorable one. Figal  scoreed with 2:18 remaining to lift Belchertown to a 3-2 win over Chicopee in the Western Massachusetts Division 3A Tournament. Belchertown (14-3-2) advances to the second round against  Greenfield (17-2-2). Francis Nigro and Matt Pacheco also scored for the Orioles. Trent Lahair and Austin Scott scored for Chicopee, which closed 9-10-2.

* Bryan Baumann and Doug Hanieski each scored twice to lift Greenfield to a 5-2 victory over Drury Tuesday.  Kyle Barnes also scored for the Green Wave. Corbin Rumbolt and Omar Ugdah scored for Drury.
