Curran scored two goals Thursday to lead Agawam to a 2-1 victory over Westfield in the Western Mass. Division III championship game.
Agawam, 16-3-3 has had quite a three-year run. Two years ago, the Brownies won the Division IIIA state championship. Last season, the Brownies moved up to Division III and lost to Westfield in the sectional final before beating the Bombers this year.
The game was a battle between two outstanding goaltenders. Agawam’s Connor McAnanama made 18 saves and foiled several strong Westfield scoring bids.
Westfield’s Garrett Matthews was even better. He made 30 saves, including several sensational stops.
Curran opened the scoring with 1:03 left in the second period. He increased Agawam’s lead to 2-0 midway through the final period.
Westfield cut the lead to 2-1 with 5:47 remaining on a goal by Ryan Porter. The Bombers pulled Matthews but could not get the equalizer.
Agawam will await the winner of Monday’s CMass D3 title game between Shrewsbury and North Middlesex in a D3 state semifinal next Wednesday.
