No one’s going to argue keeping Essex on top of the Green Mountain state’s top division. The team hasn’t lost since Dec. 28 and beat Champlain Valley (4-3), then BFA (1-0) in a matchup of our top two in the state this past weekend.

That loss to Essex means we’re going to flip-flop BFA/St. Albans with Rice at #2. Rice won twice this past week – beating South Burlington, 5-3, and Rutland, 9-3. BFA beat Middlebury Union, 3-1, before it lost to Essex.

It was an obvious choice to move #4 Stowe ahead of Middlebury Union this week. Stowe beat Middlebury, 6-5, on the road, two days after a 5-3 win over Colchester.

We’re giving #5 Spaulding the nod over Middlebury Union. Middlebury beat Spaulding, 2-0, Jan. 31, in the middle of a four-game skid for Spaulding. But it’s Middlebury that is on a losing streak now at two, whereas Spaulding has won two in a row – 7-3 over South Burlington and 5-3 over Rutland.
