It’s Essex’s world. Until someone knocks off the two-time defending Vermont Division 1 state champions. We didn’t need to talk to Division 1 coaches around the Green Mountain State to tell us that, but we did. And most agree – Essex should be #1 heading into the season.

“Essex has won the last two state championships, and I expect them to be the team to beat again,” Stowe coach Adrien Melrose said.

#2 Rice Memorial got a lot of votes for second and even some for the top spot. Essex had a convincing win over Rice in the state finals (5-0) but the Green Knights are hungry to compete this season.

#3 BFA/St. Albans earned much respect around Division 1 and why not? They had 14 wins last year.

#4 Champlain Valley Union battled Rice in last year’s semifinals and is back with some scoring pop.

#5 Colchester makes it move up to Division 1 this year and is already gaining respect of coaches. They’ll have to prove their worth with the shark tank of teams in Division 1, though
