No. 1 Essex prevailed in a well-played joust with BFA/St. Alban’s, 2-1, on Feb. 4 to maintain their perch atop the HNIB News Vermont D1 Top 5. They followed up with a 6-1 decision of Spaulding on Saturday. This Wednesday’s home date with Rice serves as prelude to Saturday’s visit by BFA for Round Two.

No. 2 BFA/St. Albans rebounded from the Essex loss with a sound 4-1 decision of Rice. The Bobwhites take on Middlebury Tuesday before heading to Essex Saturday seeking a split of the season series.

No. 3 Stowe continues to impress, knocking off both Rutland, 7-3, and Champlain Valley Union, 4-3, during the past week. This is a busy week with three games against the teams directly beneath them in the rankings – a Wednesday visit to South Burlington then a Friday-Saturday home-and-home against Middlebury.

No. 4 Middlebury, coming off a 3-3 tie against Rutland, may have the most difficult week of all. The Tigers travel to BFA Tuesday before that weekend home-and-home against Stowe.

It was an empty week for No. 5 South Burlington, which brackets Wednesday’s visit to Stowe with two dates against Spaulding.
