Rhode Island Playoff Update: It’s LaSalle vs Hendricken In D1 Final Series; Pilgrim Repeats As Champ In D3

One champ has been crowned. Another championship matchup is set. And another one is almost set.

It’s championship week in Rhode Island boys high school hockey.

Division 1 Championship

Game 1: LaSalle vs. Bishop Hendricken, March 15, time and place TBD

* In semifinal action, Andrew Haxton, Matt Dumond and Brady Berard had goals, and goalie Patrick Gribbin (19 saves) shut down Smithfield as Hendricken won Game 1, 3-1. Ben Mercurio had Smithfield’s goal. Smithfield goalie Hogan Nelson had 29 saves.

In Game 2, Hendricken scored two in the first and two more in the third for the 4-0 shutout and series-clinching win. Berard, Jack Dean, Cam Adamec and Eric Baxter had the goals for the winners, Gribbin made another 21 saves for the shutout.

* In the other semifinal, defending champion LaSalle swept Mount St. Charles with a pair of 2-1 wins. In Game 1, La Salle’s Ethan Cordeiro and Austin Tasca had the LaSalle goals. Alex Pratt of Mount St. Charles had the goal for his team. The game was knotted at one in the middle period, but Tasca put the Rams ahead at 1:20 of the final period. Justin Spencer stopped 23 shots in net for the winners.

In Game 2, Sean Helfrich scored at 5:40 of the second overtime on an assist from Colin Chapman to ice the series. Cordeiro scored to give LaSalle a 1-0 lead in the final period. Mike Canavan tied it for Mount St. Charles.

LaSalle’s Justin Spencer had 30 saves. Mounties goalie Ryan Forget had 42 saves.

Division 2 Championship

Game 1: Cumberland vs. PSW/Ponaganset, March 15, TBD

* Cumberland earned its way into the championship series with a two-game sweep of Cranston West. In Game 1, the Clippers needed to rally from an early two-goal deficit with two goals from Jackson Devlin and one each from Dominic Rousseau and Stephen Ciolino for a 4-2 victory. Cumberland got a 2-0 win in Game 2 to clinch the series.

*PSW and Ponaganset meet in a winner-take-all Game 3 Monday, March 11 at Lynch Arena.

PSW won Game 1, 6-2, thanks to 36 saves from Jeff Pimental. Bennett Hicks scored twice, and Cam Yee added a goal and an assist. Aidan Beckett, Michael Barone and Ben Force added goals for the winners. Ponaganset had goals from Ryan Watts and Matt Carlson.

Division 3 Championship

Pilgrim is getting good at this state-title thing. After winning the Division 3 state title for the first time in 28 years last winter, Pilgrim has repeated.

Pilgrim beat West Warwick/Exeter/West Greenwich, 7-1, Saturday, March 9. The Patriots also won, 3-1, in Game 1.

In Game 2, it was six goals in the middle period that did the trick.

Dylan Cunnetta, a freshman goalie, made 22 saves in the state-title clinching win. WW/EWG’s Ethan Laramee had his team’s lone goal; it put the team on top early.

Collin Driscoll had a hat trick for Pilgrim. Aaron Sherlock, Sean Noel and Jack Clements had the other goals for the state champs.

In Game 1, Clements had a goal and two assists and Sherlock and Matt Pacheco also scored as Pilgrim grabbed a 3-1 win.
