Rhode Island HS Hockey – Early Season Highlights: LaSalle Off To 2-0 Start; Nee Red Hot For South Kingstown

Kevin Stone, a Waltham High Class of 06 graduate, played lacrosse and golf before going into journalism at New England College in Henniker, NH. Kevin went to Framingham State and Middlesex Community College after that. – The first marquee matchup of the year between Mt. St. Charles and Bishop Hendricken took place this past weekend and it was BH soaring to a 6-0 win. Mike Soscia’s crew has started 2-0 after an opening night win over Barrington (5-2). In that game, Andrew Smith, James Carrara, Nick Regine, Will Cavanagh and Aiden Ferriera each had a goal.

– Mt. St. Charles beat East Greenwich 3-0 to open the season. Colden Lawrence had two goals in the victory while Connor Murray made 14 saves for the shutout.

Mike Marabello LaSalle

– LaSalle Academy also got off to a 2-0 start with wins over Burrillville and Ridgefield, CT. In the dominant 6-1 win over Burrillville, Mike Marabello, Cam Tasca, Ronan Peterson, Rob Natale, Marcello Martinelli and Vincent Healey all scored while Caleb Jawharjian had 13 saves. Boden Tomka and Martinelli scored in the 2-0 win over Ridgefield.

Steve Rodrigues Burrillville

– Burrillville bounced back with victories over North Kingstown (5-1) and Smithfield (5-1) while Cumberland has also opened its season with big wins over Prout (4-1) and Warwick (4-2). Steven Rodrigues leads Burrillville with six points (3G,3A) while Christian Oliveria is pacing Cumberland with three goals and an assist so far this season.

– Portsmouth has sprinted out to an impressive 3-0 start with wins over South Kingstown (8-3), Ponaganset (5-3) and Naraganset/Chariho (6-1). In the win over Ponaganset, Shane Temple had two goals and two assists. Aidan Toner had a hat trick in the eight-goal outburst over South Kingstown. Temple currently leads all of Rhode Island with 12 points (5G,7A).

– Aside from the loss to Portsmouth, Ponaganset has gotten off to a nice start with wins over Rogers/Middletown/Tiverton (2-1) and a 12-0 win over Mt. Hope/EP. Liam Fitzgerald put R/M/T up 1-0 in the first, but Jack Rebello tied things up at 1-1 in the second. In the third, Riley Nelson scored the game winner at the 3:06 mark. James Cavanagh made 18 saves in the win.

Eison Nee
South Kingstown

– Narragansett/Chariho and South Kingstown also have two wins apiece. N/C beat Coventry and Mt. Hope/EP. South Kingstown also beat Coventry (4-2) and Division 2B St. Raphael/PCD 9-2. South Kingstown’s Eison Nee has the most goals in RI currently with seven.

– Lincoln and North Smithfield/Providence/Johnston have started out hot. Lincoln hammered West Warwick 10-6 and got a big one-goal win over Rogers/Middletown/Tiverton (3-2). In that game, it was two Nathan Turcotte goals in the third period and 17 saves for Nathan Goff that earned the win.  Meanwhile, North Smithfield/Providence/Johnston took down St. Raphael/PCD 4-1 and Cranston 3-1. As of Monday, 10 different players have at least one point for NS/Prov/Johnston. Gansett Champagne (3G, 1A), Brandon Boudreau (2G,2A) and Alex Pickering (1G,3A) are leading the way.
