Krista Varrichione scored 1:34 into overtime to give LaSalle Academy the 2020 RIIL Girls Hockey championship with a 2-1 win over East Bay Co-op in Game 2 of their final series.
The Rams trailed 1-0 in Game 2 heading into the third period before Varrichione’s first goal tied the game and sent it to extra time.
In Game 1, Hannah Haxton’s third period goal was the game-winner in LaSalle’s eventual 4-2 win. Grayson Goolagasian sealed things in Game 1 with an empty net goal.
Anya Nichipor scored the other two LaSalle goals in the Game 1 win.
Katherine Barker had a goal and assist for East Bay, and also had East Bay’s goal in Game 2. Maeve Harrington also scored in Game 1 for East Bay.
Kate Grivers faced 45 shots in the two championship games, making 42 saves.
In the semifinal round, LaSalle swept the South County Storm two game to none. East Bay Co-op needed all three games to advance, beating Burrillville/Ponaganset/Bay View two games to one.
LaSalle has now won six of the last nine Rhode Island state championships.
