Here is a look at some Rhode Island Division 2 teams…
ROGERS/MIDDLETOWN/ROCKY HILL (14-2-2)
New coach Johnny Sheil starts with a leg up: he gets back returning scorer JC Lopes, a senior right winger. Ben Lyman, Riley Cranson and Caleb Leys are back on the front lines, too.
Key returning defensemen include senior Dylan Stahl and juniors Danny Sullivan and Jack Kane.
“We need good team chemistry and playing like a pack of starving wolves every single shift,” Sheil said.
NORTH KINGSTOWN (9-10-2)
The Skippers, led by coach Bob Nabb, are looking for some firepower on offense. Their top returning scorer, Nick Chabot, had six goals and one assist last year. Justin McCarthy, Chabot’s sophomore classmate, had 3-4-7 scoring numbers last year.
Patrick Asher, a senior, should lead the defense. He had five goals and two assists last winter.
Bishop Hendricken transfer Carter Damm (defense) and Prout transfer Nate Collins (goalie) should help.
“There are opportunities for players to earn playing time as there are many roles to fill throughout the lineup after graduating 10 seniors last year,” Nabb said. “The goaltending spot is up for grabs after graduating two seniors last year. Three quality candidates will be battling for playing time.”
CRANSTON WEST (5-11-0)
Coach Matt Brannon’s Falcons return led by senior forward Jaycob Hargreaves (5-5-10) and junior forward Cam Koretsky (2-8-10). Defensemen Dylan Demers and
Jack Drohen are back.
“We have a veteran team with a lot of experience playing at the higher level,” Brannon said. “Moving down to Division 2 will be a huge challenge for our team. We need to stick together because we will get everyone’s best game each weekend.”
EAST GREENWICH (3-21-0)
Don Dunwoody returns to lead the Avengers. The team will be captained by senior Jack Fox, senior Luc Ventura, and junior Conrad Swanson who will be asked to produce on the offensive end along with senior Trent Leisching and Dan Madden, a sophomore.
Sophomores Jake Barron, Spencer Hallagan and Sam Slaiby along with junior Nick Sanzi head up the defense.
Coach Kevin Sullivan’s takes his PSW team into the season with some strong returnees. Cam Yee, Ben Kaihler, Michael Barone, Aidan Beckett and Dom Reposa lead the offense while Drew Andella, Nolan Carlson and Hunter Parker lead the blue liners. Goalies Jeff Pimental and Sean Moreau are back.
“We have a great returning group with strong leadership,” Sullivan said. “Continuity from last year will pay dividends especially early on. Scoring goals should not be a problem as long as everyone stays healthy.”
Mark J Andreozzi’s team played in Division 1 last winter but is in Division 2 this winter. It welcomes back senior forwards Jackson Shevlin and Steve Ciolino and junior forwards Aiden Cleary and Keith Sisson.
Senior defensemen Sean Meers, John Mello and Sam Juhnten and sophomore goalie Jack Byrne are back.
“We want to be a hard-working, strong team that plays in all the three zones,” Andreozzi said.
SOUTH KINGSTOWN (7-10-1)
Ed Curran’s crew is trying to get back to the .500 level. Seniors Colin LeClerc (captain) and Mike Boynton (assistant captain) lead the way. Juniors Andy Sprague and Evan Adams will serve as assistant coaches.
Juniors Zach Hupf, Ezra Gonsalves and Patrick Young and sophomore Curtis Granville are also expected to contribute.
Juniors George Cairns and Aidan Moriarty and sophomore Bennett Souza should be a factor on defense, while junior Ricky Mather will man the nets.
