Bishop Hendricken freshman Brady Berard has a lot of hockey in front of him but probably won’t score two bigger goals than he did Saturday night at Meehan Auditorium in Providence.
The Hawks rookie scored the game-tying goal in the third period and then the game-winning goal in overtime to lead Bishop Hendricken to a 4-3 win and sweep over LaSalle in the best-of-three Division 1 Rhode Island boys hockey state championship.
Oh, and by the way – Berard added another goal earlier, so he had a hat trick in the Ocean State’s championship-clinching win. It capped off a reversal of fortune for the Hawks, who lost to the Rams in last year’s state final.
LaSalle led, 1-0, when Mason Daignault scored in the first. Jack Dean tied it 1:14 later. Berard and LaSalle’s Zenas Kennedy then traded goals, and it was 2-2 heading into the final period.
Colin Chapman gave LaSalle a 3-2 lead before Berard scored the first of his final two goals.
Bishop Hendricken won Game 1, 5-3. The Hawks took a 3-0 lead in the first with a barrage of goals in the final half of the period.
It led, 5-1, until John Devine took feeds from Liam Peterson and Brayden Edwards with 1:14 left in the middle period to make it 5-2 heading into the final period. LaSalle tacked on another – from Austin Tasca — with less than six minutes left but couldn’t keep the momentum going.
Dumond (three assists), Berard, Barker, Andrew Haxton and Nathan Palumbo scored Bishop Hendricken’s goals.
Patrick Gribbin made 25 saves in the win.
