R.I. Tourney Highlights: LaSalle, Hendricken, Moses Brown sweep D1 quarterfinals

The Rhode Island boys hockey playoffs are in full swing. Here’s a recap of action this past week.


 Game 1: LaSalle 7, Cumberland 2

LaSalle began its quarterfinal sweep of Cumberland by taking a 5-1 first-period lead. Alex Newton had two goals in the win. Brayden Edwards, Matt Pimental, Colin Chapman, Nick DiMuccio and John Devine also had goals for the winners, and Justin Spencer got the win in net. Aidan Cleary and Jack Malloy had the goals for Cumberland.

Game 2: LaSalle 7, Cumberland 3

LaSalle started later this game, but had the same result. It took a 3-1 lead into the final period. Pimental had a natural hat trick for the winners, scoring the first three goals. Ryan Schwender, Edwards (three assists), Newton and DiMuccio also had goals. Manny Cabral, Stephen Ciolino and Malloy scored for Cumberland.


Game 1: Mount St. Charles 1, Smithfield 0

John Belisle’s first-period goal on an assist from Trey Bourque was all the Mounties needed to take a 1-0 series lead. Michael Hauswirth had the shutout win, and Hogan Nelson had an awesome night in net for Smithfield.

Game 2: Smithfield 3, Mount St. Charles 0

Smithfield evened the series as Nelson made 23 saves. Tyler Varin had a goal and two assists for the Sentinels, and Ryan Falls added two assists. Daniel Smith and Pearse McCullough also scored.

Game 3: Monday, March 12, 6 p.m., Adelard Arena 


Game 1: Bishop Hendricken 5, Cranston 3

Cranston took a 1-0 lead and cut Hendricken’s lead to 4-3 in the third but Dyland Webber’s goal on feeds from Andrew Haxton and Jack Dean iced it for the Hawks. Peter Krekorian, Brett Berard (two) and Haxton also scored for the winners. Joshua Zambarano, Jake Drohen and Jeffrey Wardle had the goals for Cranston.

Game 2: Bishop Hendricken 8, Cranston 1

Hendricken snapped a 1-1 tie by scoring the final seven goals. Dean scored twice, and Ben DeFelice and Shawn Catala each had a goal and an assist.


Game 1: Moses Brown 5, Burrillville 2

Game 2: Moses Brown 3, Burrillville 0


 Game 1: North Kingstown 3, RMR 0

John Fuller earned the shutout, and Michael Macchioni had two goals. Griffin Mancini added two assists, and Nicholas Sellers added a goal and an assist as North Kingstown took a 1-0 series lead.

Game 2: RMR 3, North Kingstown 1

RMR evened things up with a 3-1 win.

 Game 3: Monday, March 12, 6 p.m., Portsmouth Abbey Rink


Game 1: Coventry 7, PSW 1

Game 2: Coventry 6, PSW 3


Game 1: Barrington 8, East Providence 3

Game 2: Barrington 5, East Providence 3


Game 1: Portsmouth 5, Ponaganset 2

Game 2: Portsmouth 2, Ponaganset 1


The Division 3 finals are set with West Warwick/Exeter/West Greenwich taking on Pilgrim Friday, March 16, in Game 1 at Meehan Auditorium (8 p.m.). Game 2 is the following night at the same venue Saturday, March 17. 

Game 1: West Warwick/Exeter/West Greenwich 4, Scituate/Woonsocket 1

Brenden Coski had a hat trick, and Ernesto Watsky had a goal for the winners. Evan Pendergast scored for the losers.

Game 2: West Warwick/Exeter/West Greenwich 4, Scituate/Woonsocket 1

Liam Hogan had two goals as WW/E/WG completed the sweep. West Warwick/Exeter West Greenwich will play Pilgrim in the best-of-three finals beginning on Friday night. Nicholas Pecchia and Jake Hernandez added goals.
