#2 seed Arlington punched its ticket to the Boston Garden Sunday for the MIAA Girls Division 1 championship game, as it held on for a 2-1 win over sixth-seeded Shrewsbury at Gallo Arena.
This will be the Spy Ponders first-ever trip to the D1 title game.
Junior Maddie Krepelka, Arlington’s top scorer, netted an unassisted goal in the first period, giving the Spy Ponders a 1-0 lead.
That lead held until the third period, when Krepelka struck again, this time assisted by linemates Gabby Russo and Julia Krepelka, to give Arlington a 2-0 lead.
Soon thereafter, the Colonials got on the scoreboard, closing the margin on a Kaci Ryder rebound goal.
Shrewsbury pressed but was unable to get the tying goal past Arlington goalie Elise Rodd.
“Both teams battled hard,” said Arlington coach Jeff Mead. “I thought we managed the puck in the neutral zone well and we made good decisions. Elise Rodd was solid.”
Arlington will face either top-seed Austin Prep or fifth-seeded Acton-Boxboro in Sunday’s title game. The Spy Ponders (22-1-1) only loss of the season was to Austin Prep back in December. They have won 19 straight since.
