Old Rochester/Fairhaven left little doubt as to who’s the premier Eastern Mass. Division 3 boys hockey team this winter.
The Bulldogs convincingly beat Lowell, 5-1, in the MIAA D3 North/South semifinal at Harvard University Wednesday. They move on to the TD Garden in Boston for the Division 3 state title game against Shrewsbury on Sunday.
Shrewsbury beat Westfield, 5-0, in the Central/West state final last night.
Upstart Lowell finished 16-9. They came into the tourney ranked No. 9 out of 11 teams in Division 3 North and knocked off the top seed, Swampscott, along the way.
Old Rochester/Fairhaven, meanwhile, has been red-hot since the start of the season. The No. 5 seed out of 21 qualifying squads in the South, the Bulldogs are now 24-3-0 after beating South powers Hopkinton, Dartmouth and Rockland en route to the coveted South crown.
In the North/South game, Coach Eric Labonte’s team got goals from Landon Goguen, Sam Henrie and three from top scorer Noah Strawn, who went on to complete a hat trick in the third period.
Goalie Chase Cunningham earned another solid win in net.
Connor Barter had Lowell’s lone goal, cutting the lead to 2-1.
Old Rochester and Shrewsbury did play during the regular season, with Shrewsbury coming out on top 4-2 in the Bulldogs Cross-State Challenge championship game back in December.
Old Rochester has 169 goals on the season. Strawn has 95 points on 47 goals, and Henrie (40-33-73), Goguen (20-39-59) and Tayber Labonte (14-36-50) are also having career seasons.
