The Eastern Mass. Division 3 North boys hockey tourney is now down to two teams..
No. 9 Lowell meets No. 3 Latin Academy in the finals Sunday, March 12, at Chelmsford Forum (6:30 p.m.). Lowell (now 14-9-0) knocked off Newton South, top-seeded Swampscott and Shawsheen, 2-1, to reach the North finals.
They’ll match up with one of the North’s most consistent powers, Latin Academy of Boston. The Dragons took care of Lynn, 4-1, and came out on top in another postseason classic Thursday, 3-2 in two overtimes, over Boston City League rival East Boston.
Latin Academy senior Nolan Rooney scored on a deflection just a little more than a minute into overtime to send the team into the North finals. Junior Donovan Lamonia made the initial shot.
Latin Academy’s Conor Walsh had tied the game with just less than three minutes to play. John Connolly had the other goal, giving the Dragons a 1-0 lead. Ryan Tosto and Jake Giangregorio had the Eastie goals.
Cinderella Lowell, back in the North finals for the first time in 11 years, got a standout performance from Patrick Cote as it beat Shawsheen Tech. He had close to 30 saves, half of which came in the final period as the Rams went all out for the equalizer. Shawsheen’s Bobby Mitza also had a fine game in net.
Casey Sheehy and Thomas Hassett (shorthanded) had the goals for the Lowell. Jack Duggan cut the lead in half, but it left Shawsheen with just under two minutes to rally for the tie. Cote didn’t let it happen.
