SUNDAY, MARCH 11
(at Gallo Arena)
No. 6 Marshfield 1, No. 11 Braintree 0 (OT)
After 45-plus minutes of scoreless hockey, the Rams put a quick end to this one in the first minute of overtime to advance to the D1 championship game at TD Garden on March 18.
Sophomore defenseman Jon Jordan’s pass found junior forward Paul Rorke in transition and Rorke fended off a Braintree defender before beating the Wamps’ standout senior goalie Owen Cuddyer for the backhand winner. Try as he might, Cuddyer – who had 17 of his 32 saves in the second period – couldn’t will the Wamps to victory. Meanwhile, Marshfield keeper Nevan Costello had a relatively relaxing 14-save shutout.
Marshfield (15-5-6) is seeking its first D1 title since 2011 and third overall. The Rams will meet the winner of Wednesday night’s North final between Winchester and Waltham in the title game. They tied Waltham, 1-1, back in December and did not play Winchester. Braintree concluded an 11-7-6 campaign.
