The MIAA Division 3 South boys hockey finals are set – and it’s all about rivalry.
#11 Hopkinton (15-6-2) will meet neighbor #9 Ashland (15-5-3) in the South sectional championship Sunday, March 10 at 4 p.m. at Gallo Arena in Bourne.
These are schools that have played in 95 Thanksgiving Day football games. They are Tri-Valley League competitors in hockey that meet twice every year much like in many other sports. They split the regular-season series – Hopkinton winning, 5-2, in Marlboro Dec. 15, and Ashland winning, 3-2, in Framingham Jan. 26.
* Bourne’s Mike Bonito (two) and Christian Mulkern scored goals, including one each in the third. But it was Ashland’s night in this semifinal as the team nipped the Canalmen, 4-3. Ashland scored three goals in the final two minutes of the second period. It marked a string of four unanswered goals. Ashland’s Jackson Merrill, Jack Reap, Dom Boccelli and Jackson Hornung had the Clockers goals.
* Hopkinton shocked Coyle Cassidy in the other semifinal, 7-0. Cole Thomas had 21 saves in the win. Sean Walsh, Will Quinlan and Jake Weinstock had two goals each, and Kyle Rogers added the other. Andrew Gilbert had three assists, and Steve Simoes and Dan Kirk added two helpers each.
