Top-seeded Canton continued its impressive post-season march, claiming the MIAA Division 2 South sectional championship in a big way, blanking third-seeded Westwood, 8-0, to secure its spot in this Sunday’s Division 2 title game.
With the 8-0 win, the Bulldogs outscored their four tournament opponents (Medway, Oliver Ames, Norwood and Westwood) by a combined 22-1. Add that into an equally impressive regular season and now through 25 games (24-0-1), Canton has 125 goals and allowed just 21.
Their offensive depth was on display Sunday, as seven different Bulldogs had goals. The only tally Canton would need came in the first minute of play, when defenseman Owen Lehane blasted home a shot from the blue line.
Ryan Nolte made it 2-0 with a power play strike late in the first period, and then a quick three-goal blitz early in the second stanza gave Canton a 5-0 lead and put this one away. Ryan Colby, Johnny Hagan and Tim Kelleher each had a goal in that second period run.
Chris Lavoie, Tommy Vaughan and Kelleher added goals for the Bulldogs, who now will face the winner of Monday’s North sectional title game between Boston Latin (the team that gave Canton its tie) and Tewksbury.
