The number of undefeated teams in Division 1 were cut in half this week with Franklin and Andover tasting defeat for the first time. The two remaining unbeatens remain solidly entrenched in the top two spots in this week’s HNIB News Massachusetts Girls D1 Top 10.

Austin Prep

#1 Austin Prep (13-0-0) picked up wins over Billerica/Chelmsford (2-0) and Hanover NH (4-1), most noteworthy the Cougars allowed a goal against Hanover, just their fourth of the year and first since January 9. A second showdown with St. Mary’s is set for Wednesday, followed by a key non-leaguer with Notre Dame (Saturday) and Arlington Catholic (Sunday). Senior Ella Saracco has 19 points.

Delaney Williams

#2 Duxbury (14-0-1) faced two formidable opponents and came away with a pair of wins, edging #6 Braintree (4-3) and downing Hingham (4-1). Pembroke (Wednesday) and Plymouth (Saturday) provide this week’s opposition. Freshman Delaney Williams has 14 goals.

Cassidy Gruning

Playing at the top of its game, Methuen/Tewksbury (13-1-1) is up to #3 this week. The Red Rangers got revenge on #4 Andover (13-1-1) with a 5-1 win and then beat HPNA (3-1). Senior Cassidy Gruning (23 pts) has been hot. M/T has a couple of tough outings this week, hosting Billerica/Chelmsford (Wednesday) and Westford Academy (Saturday).

The Warriors responded by dumping Acton-Boxboro Saturday (4-1). They have Westford Academy on Thursday, and then HPNA Saturday.

#5 St. Mary’s (11-1-2) beat Beverly/Danvers and was then tied up by Matignon (1-1) on Saturday. They are ready for their second crack at Austin Prep Wednesday in their barn. The Spartans get Arlington Catholic on Saturday.

Despite the loss to Duxbury, Braintree (12-3-0) remains at #6. The Wamps had an impressive win Saturday over Walpole (3-1). Another big win lies ahead with road games vs. Wellesley (Wednesday) and Needham (Saturday).

#7 Franklin (13-1-1) had a split week, losing to Walpole (3-1) and beating Mansfield/Oliver Ames/Foxboro (4-1). The Panthers face Canton for a second time on Wednesday, then have Stoughton on Saturday.

#8 Reading (8-2-4) and #9 Arlington (9-2-3) played to a scoreless tie on Saturday in their second meeting of the season. The Rockets play Winchester (Wednesday) and Woburn (Saturday) this week, while the Spy Ponders will face Woburn Wednesday and Lexington (Saturday). Senior Elizabeth Liakos has struck for 10 goals on the season.

Back in the Top 10 this week is Needham (9-2-2) at #10. The Rockets had a pair of big wins over Milton (7-0) and Weymouth (9-1). Prior to facing Braintree, Needham will see Framingham Wednesday
