Mass. Girls Division I Poll
Not much new to report for the top seven in the HNIB News Massachusetts Girls Division 1 poll. The top teams keep on winning, or at least tying amongst themselves.
Woburn (15-0-1) remains #1 for the second straight week. The Tanners downed Wakefield (8-1) and then beat a good Winchester team (3-2) on Saturday, the team that put a tie on their record earlier this season.
Woburn gets Belmont on Wednesday, then Arlington on Saturday in a pair of Middlesex League Liberty Division games.
#2 Austin Prep (10-1-2) was tied up by St. Mary’s 2-2 in a CCL showdown, then followed up with a 3-0 conquest of Longmeadow. The Cougars look to get things cranked up against Andover (Wednesday) and Hanover, NH (Saturday).
#3 Beverly/Danvers (14-0-1) is getting challenged, but the Panthers continue to win. A pair of 4-2 wins over Winthrop/Lynn and Peabody/Lynnfield highlighted their week. Looking ahead, Beverly/Danvers gets Billerica/Chelmsford (Friday) and Masconomet (Saturday).
The winning streak is now six games for #4 Reading (10-1-1). The Rockets clinched a post-season berth with wins over Wilmington (4-2) and Lexington (3-0). A non-leaguer with Arlington Catholic is on for Monday, then league games with Arlington (Wednesday) and Winchester (Saturday).
#5 Needham (15-0-1) continues to roll along, notching wins over Weymouth (3-1) and Braintree (5-2). The Rockets take on Dedham (Wednesday) then have an intriguing matchup Thursday against D1’s top team – Notre Dame Academy.
#6 St. Mary’s (10-2-1) had an impressive week with the tie against Austin Prep and a solid 4-0 win over Haverhill/North Andover Saturday. A three-game week has the Lady Spartans taking on Winthrop/Lynn (Monday), Archbishop Williams (Wednesday) and Arlington Catholic (Saturday).
Wins over Lincoln-Sudbury (3-0) and Billerica/Chelmsford (2-1) keep Westford Academy (10-2-1) firmly entrenched at #7 (and tourney-eligble). On the horizon, the Grey Ghosts get Andover (Monday), Waltham (Thursday) and Andover again (Saturday).
Boston Latin (14-1-2) jumps back up to #8 after solid wins over Waltham (1-0), Fontbonne (3-1) and Central Catholic (6-1). The Wolfpack is ready for Wayland/Weston (Monday) and then Haverhill/North Andover (Saturday).
#9 Braintree (9-3-1) did beat Framingham (4-1) ahead of the loss to Needham. The Wamps get Walpole (Wednesday) and Newton North (Saturday).
Several teams could claim the #10 spot, but this week it will go to Hingham (7-4-5), who beat Milton (4-2) and tied Falmouth (1-1). A key battle looms Wednesday with Duxbury. Canton is Saturday’s opponent.
