Facing adversity head-on is a key trait of the good teams. Such was the case Saturday when Austin Prep entered the third period of its game with Longmeadow down 2-1. But, the Cougars struck for three goals and left Western Mass. with a 4-2 win over a good team.

Thus, Austin Prep (8-0-1) remains at #1 in this week’s HNIB News Massachusetts Girls Top 10. The Cougars also blanked Connecticut power East Catholic (5-0) and beat league foe Archbishop Williams (4-0).

A return engagement with ABW is scheduled for Wednesday, On Saturday, the Cougars are set to host D2’s #1 club, Notre Dame of Hingham in a battle of the two defending state champs. Game time is 8pm at Stoneham Arena.

#2 Woburn (11-0-1) continues to hold serve. The Lady Tanners, led by scoring ace Georgie Santullo up front and two-way defenseman Lily Mallard, blanked both Arlington Catholic (4-0) and Lexington (5-0). They have outscored opponents 60-14. They get Watertown (Wednesday) and Melrose (Saturday).

Also holding serve is #3 Beverly/Danvers (11-0-1). The Panthers dispatched both Burlington (8-1) and Duxbury (4-2) this past week. The senior duo of McKinley Karpa and Izzy Primack have been have been lethal. Only one game this week for B/D, a Tuesday matchup with Marblehead.

#4 Reading (5-1-1) returned to action Saturday and continued its offensive ways beating Belmont (8-3). A busy week has the Rockets taking on Arlington (Monday), Melrose (Wednesday) and Stoneham (Saturday).

A solid week keeps Needham (11-0-1) both undefeated and staying at #5. These Rockets beat Braintree and Milton both by 5-1 scores, then blanked Newton North (4-0) and Longmeadow (1-0). Norwood (Wednesday) and Framingham (Saturday) loom this week.

#6 St. Mary’s (7-2-0) trounced Central Catholic (10-1), than had its Saturday game with Winthrop/Lynn postponed. A non-leaguer with Framingham is up for Monday, and then Archbishop Williams on Saturday.

#7 Boston Latin (9-0-2) is up one spot, continuing to win the tough games. The Wolfpack took down Concord-Carlisle (5-1) and Lincoln-Sudbury (2-1) this week. Coming up, BLS gets Acton-Boxboro (Wednesday), Wayland/Weston (Thursday) and Cambridge (Saturday).

#8 Westford Academy (6-2-1) split for the week, falling to Lexington (3-2) and then knocking off Bishop Fenwick (4-1). This week, the Grey Ghosts will tackle Algonquin/Hudson (Thursday) and Acton-Boxboro (Saturday).

Needham knocked #9 Braintree (6-1-1) from the unbeaten ranks, then the Wamps were deadlocked by Wellesley. Braintree did slam Weymouth (7-1) on Saturday. This week, its Natick (Wednesday), Quincy/North Quincy (Saturday) and Fontbonne (Sunday).

Jumping back into the poll at #10 is Haverhill/Pentucket/North Andover (8-1-2). HPNA had a tie with Lincoln-Sudbury (3-3) and a win over Cambridge (6-1).  This week its Waltham (Wednesday) and Central Catholic (Sunday).
