St. John’s Prep

* In the Catholic Conference, sophomores Cole Lopilato and Nick Townshend both scored to push No. 8 St. John’s Prep past No. 13 Malden Catholic, 2-1. Lopilato’s game-winner made it 2-0 in the second period. Both players are recently returned from early-season injuries for the Eagles, now 3-0-2 in their last five. Brendan Curtis scored for the Lancers and Brady Roux finished with 28 saves.

* In the Catholic Central Large, Bishop Fenwick controlled No. 3 St. Mary’s, 3-1, pushing its way into the league title chase. Jake Murphy, Ian Worthley and Cam Martin scored for the Crusaders. Eric Toto had the lone goal for skidding St. Mary’s, which is 1-3-1 in its last five. HNIB contributor Jim Clark notes the win was Fenwick’s first against St. Mary’s since January 2002 – a span of 25 games (0-24-1).

* In the Catholic Central Large, No. 11 Austin Prep strengthened its grip on first place with a 3-0 win against Lowell Catholic. Joe Thibodeau, Doug Russo and Chris Roy accounted for the Cougars’ goals.

* In non-league action, No. 16 Reading settled for a 2-2 tie against No. 10 Hingham as the Harbormen struck for a pair of third-period goals. Cam Lawthorne and Shawn Golden staked the Rockets to a 2-0 lead through two periods. The Rockets “won” in OT on Lawthorne’s second goal but it’s a tie for MIAA Tournament qualification purposes.

* Falmouth stepped out of state and overwhelmed Barrington (RI), 7-2, behind a 55-shot barrage. Nick Champani notched a hat trick and Eric Wainwright scored twice for the Clippers.

* In the MVC/DCL One, Ben Pitts (2 goals, assist) and Bobby Turner (goal, 2 assists) had a hand in three goals each as Chelmsford handled Acton-Boxboro, 6-2. Christian Gastonguay, Tommy Hopkins and Owen Flanagan also scored and Daniel Foley made 19 saves to earn the win in the Lions’ cage.

* In the Bay State Herget Division, Jimmy Fallon’s SHG stood as the game-winner as Milton squeezed past Needham. Bobby Carew also scored for the Wildcats and Ryan Dexter had 33 saves.

* Marshfield needed an offensive breakout and got it with a 7-0 whitewash of Silver Lake. Nick Souretis led the Rams with two goals and two assists while Griffin Mudge and Tim Doyle both contributed a goal and three assists. Matt Lawlor and Andrew Guilfoyle notched their first varsity goals and Shane Brait also scored.

* No. 12 Duxbury doubled up Plymouth North, 4-2. Nick Demio, Billy Mrowka, Will Lyons and Zach Stewart scored for the Green Dragons.

* In non-league action, No. 18 Natick of the Bay State Carey edged No. 14 Independent Shrewsbury, 2-1, on David Mega’s game-winner in the final two minutes. Sean McWhinnie also scored for the Redhawks.

* In the Hockomock League, Franklin rallied past King Philip, 4-2. Colin Hedvig scored twice while Declan Lovett (2 assists) and JT Dwyer added a goal each. Goalie Ray Ivers had 22 saves for the win.

* In Middlesex League crossover action, junior Charlie Haggerty notched a hat trick and an assist and junior Brendan Fennell had a hand in all five goals with two goals and three assists as the Freedom Division’s Melrose knocked off the Liberty’s Lexington, 5-2.

* Defenseman Will Martone blasted home a pair of goals in Barnstable’s 4-2 non-league win against Billerica.

* Freshman Nolan Leonard scored twice as No. 15 Braintree of the Bay State Conference’s Herget Division doubled up the Hockomock League’s Mansfield, 6-3, in non-league action. Matt Duane, Kyle Roche, Chris Sarno and Scott Lagos also scored for the Wamps.

* Independent No. 10 Hingham handled old rival No. 12 Duxbury of the Patriot League, 4-0, overcoming a 40-save performance by Green Dragons’ goalie Steve Pisani. The Harbormen got goals from James Eustace, Cam Tedeschi, Larry Osterberg and Tim Carroll.
