No. 1 Pope Francis has yet to play an MIAA contest – but the Cardinals sure have been busy. They took part in the high profile Rider Cup Tournament Tournament in Albany, NY, defeating host school Albany Academy, 3-0. Pope Francis also stepped out of state and upended Xavier of Connecticut, 4-0.

Their first MIAA test comes against Central Catholic on Thursday night in the semifinal round of the annual Peter Frates Winter Classic hosted by St. John’s Prep.

No. 2 BC High acquitted itself well in a season-opening 4-2 loss to New Jersey power Don Bosco. The Eagles rebounded to rout Arlington, 7-0, in a meeting between the last two 1A champions, then handled No. 18 St. John’s (S), 5-1. The Eagles take on host St. John’s Prep in Thursday’s other Frates Classic semifinal.

No. 3 Hingham has displayed balanced offense and stout defense. The Harbormen have already posted an impressive win against St. John’s Prep and handled Central Catholic on Saturday.

No. 4 Braintree has allowed but a single goal. The Wamps followed up shutouts of Brookline and Milton with a 3-1 decision of Malden Catholic on Saturday. Up next is the Island Creek Oyster Cup.

After a surprising opening 2-2 tie against Coyle-Cassidy, No. 5 Marshfield rebounded with wins against No. 15 Waltham and Barnstable. The Rams take part in the upcoming MHL Cup this weekend.

No. 6 Arlington rebounded from that loss to B.C. High with Saturday’s impressive shutout of No. 17 Reading. The Spy Ponders are off until Jan. 3 when they head west to take on Pope Francis.

No. 7 Burlington snapped a two-game losing streak with Saturday’s emphatic 7-3 win against Wakefield. The Red Devils meet Barnstable Wednesday and will host an improved Billerica squad Saturday.

No. 8 Xaverian already owns a couple of come-from-behind wins and rallied for a 5-all tie against No. 9 Austin Prep in an endowment game on Saturday. The Hawks take on St. John’s (S) in the MHL Cup Thursday.

AP sandwiched Catholic Central Large wins against Arlington Catholic and Matignon around a tie with Archbishop Williams before Saturday’s shootout. League foe No. 13 St. Mary’s is next in Thursday’s semifinal at the Christie Serino Christmas Classic.

No. 10 St. John’s Prep rebounded from that opening loss to Hingham to shut out No. 11 Andover and improved Framingham, the Flyers’ first loss of the season. The Eagles host the annual Frates Winter Classic this Thursday and Friday at the Essex Sports Center.
