Massachusetts D1 Boys Highlights: BC High takes control in Catholic Conference

*No. 3 BC High (8-3-1) took control of the Catholic Conference championship chase with its 4-1 win against No. 5 St. John’s Prep (6-3-1). Timmy Kelly gave BCH a 1-0 lead in the first period and the Eagles put it away with second-period goals from Andrew McDonough, Tommy Kramer and Matt Lakus. David Sacco had the lone SJP tally.

*In Catholic West action, No. 2 Pope Francis (10-1-2) erased a 4-1 deficit and outlasted No. 10 St. John’s of Shrewsbury (7-2-3), 6-5, as Trevor Crawford broke a 5-all tie with 7:09 to play. Brendan Nehmer scored two goals for the Cardinals. Will Horrigan netted a pair for the Pioneers.

*In the Middlesex League, No. 13 Reading (7-3-0) shut down Lexington, 3-0. Matt Coughlin had the shutout. Nick McFarland, Sean Barbera and Matt Fiorenza had the Rockets’ goals while Mike Tobin and Matt Gallagher both had two assists.

*In the Catholic Conference, No. 11 Catholic Memorial (5-4-2) made first-period goals by Chris Rooney and Glen Considine stand up in a 2-1 win against No. 16 Malden Catholic (3-5-2). Brendan Clancy anchored the win with 32 saves. Tom Larson had two assists.

*Independent No. 12 Hingham (5-3-4) shut out Duxbury, 3-0. Frank Higgins scored what proved to be the game-winner off the game’s opening faceoff. Tommy Kornack and Jake Quilty also scored for the Harbormen.

*In the Middlesex League, No. 4 Burlington opened a 4-1 lead and held off Melrose, 6-3. Ryan O’Halloran (ENG) had two goals for the Red Devils while Mitch Maida and Spencer Reith both scored their first varsity goal for the Red Devils. Jeff Russo and Sean Savage (PPG) also connected.

*Cape Ann League leader No. 20 Newburyport (6-1-4), stretched its unbeaten streak to seven games (5-0-2) with a 5-1 win against Pentucket. Junior Rob Johnston had two goals, including the GWG. Sophomore Ty Koglin, junior Jacob Grossi-Hogg and senior Ethan Coir also scored for the Clippers.

*In the Catholic Central Large, Mark Blaney’s late power play goal lifted Archbishop Williams past Bishop Fenwick, 3-2. Cade Hess scored twice for the Bishops. Jared Crowell and Ian Worthley connected for Fenwick.

*In non-league action, St. John’s (S) got a pair of goals from defenseman Mike Ayles in a 6-4 decision of No. 15 Xaverian. Tim Farley had the GWG and Griifin Burns, Nick Palermo and Will Horrigan also scored. C.J. Monturio scored twice for the Hawks.
