For the past several years, the Jim Gormley Cup tournament has served as a kick-off to the high school season on the South Shore, taking place in early December at Gallo Arena and consisting of four boys squads.

Each year, Tournament Director Fred Carbone has awarded a scholarship to a need-based player with proceeds from the event. This season, Carbone is taking that one better. He has secured eight high school teams to participate in two 4-team Divisions, with proceeds from this year’s tournament to be donated to A.J. Quetta and Jake Thibeault, two local players who have recently suffered severe injuries while playing; Quetta, from Bishop Feehan HS, this past January in a high school game, and Thibeault, a Milton Academy blueliner injured in September while playing for his club hockey team.

Once the word got out what he wanted to do, Carbone said it was easy to increase the tournament’s field from four teams to eight for this the eighth annual Jim Gormley Cup (it was not held in 2020 due to the pandemic).

“Everyone wanted to jump in and help,” Carbone said. “That is the nature of the hockey culture in the Boston area.”

The Jim Gormley Cup will feature a nice cross-section of teams from throughout the state.

The Quetta Division will feature Scituate, Marblehead, Plymouth North and Norwood. The Thibault Division will consist of Hanover, Longmeadow, Marlboro and Sandwich.

Here is the schedule for the event: All games will be at Gallo Arena.

Carbone said that the Board of Directors at Gallo Arena has donated some ice time for the tournament, and it is Carbone’s hope that once the puck drops, all the proceeds from the gate receipts can go directly to the boys. He says if anyone or any business wishes to make a donation to AJ’s and Jake’s scholarship, a check can be sent to:
