Mass. HS Boys Hockey – Boston City League Preview: East Boston, Latin Academy Only Teams Taking The Ice This Season

Jim Clark joined Hockey Night in Boston in December 2019, and has covered high school hockey in Massachusetts for more than three decades. He also covers high school hockey and is a multiplatform editor for the Boston Globe, and previously spent two decades as high school hockey reporter at the Boston Herald, where he also served as the high schools editor from 2000-06. Clark was honored by the Mass. State Hockey Coaches Association with its William Stewart Award for contributions to the sport in May 2019, and also received the Joel Perlmutter Award for media coverage in 2006. A graduate of UMass, he also spent eight years as sports editor/reporter at the Sentinel & Enterprise in Fitchburg, and has extensively covered high school hockey in Central and Western Mass. as well as Connecticut.

The Boston City League once again will have only two teams on the ice this season – East Boston and Latin Academy. O’Bryant had hoped to make a go of it, but canceled its schedule because of a lack of numbers. Eastie and Latin Academy are scheduled to meet once this season – Jan. 12 at Matthews Arena.

MIAA Division: 3

The Jets got a little bit of experience on the ice during the abbreviated 2021 season, and hope that will pay some dividends this time around.

Captain Arianna Orlandina is a returning BCL All-Star and will captain the Jets from the blue line. Goalie Jacob Thomas also was a league all-star a season ago.

The Jets will look for scoring punch from Mike Doe and Mike Noonan.

Rounding out the roster are: Vinny Almeida, Nick Calderon, Chris Frazier, Angel Gonzales, Matthew Griffin, Robert Kubinec, Justin Lynch, Keith Splaine, Seamus Sullivan, Nick Testa and Ryan Thomas.

MIAA Division: 4

The Dragons hope to be a contender in the MIAA’s new Division 4 with a solid roster mixed with experience and youth.

Senior forwards Aidan Farley and Brendan O’Brien are captains along with senior defenseman James Tobin. The other seniors on the roster are goalie Cian Flaherty and forward/defenseman Liam Smith.

A solid cast of juniors includes forwards Eddie Brodney-Mcdevitt, David Earley and Ryan Shields, and defensemen Patrick Brophy, John Driscoll, Aiden Ellis and Eamon Vraibel. The lone sophomores are defensemen Evan Chan and Patrick O’Hagan, forward Anthony Taurasi and forward/defenseman Barra Ryan.

The young group of Dragons includes freshmen forwards Ryan Farnham, Michael Hampton, Chris Keane and Ronan Swadling-Stevenson, and eighth-grade forwards Coleman Donovan and Thomas Misilo.
