The first annual Middlesex League vs Catholic Central League Showcase is all set for December 30th. Seven girls high school games, pitting a Middlesex League team against a Catholic Central League team, will take place Monday at the Essex Sports Center in Middleton.
While several individuals have been involved in coordinating the event, St. Mary’s Lynn head coach Frank Pagliuca has been the point person for developing the Showcase, which will serve as an avenue to promote the Massachusetts girls high school game.
“The concept of the ML vs CCL Showcase was based on the college basketball model of the Big Ten vs ACC Showcase,” Pagliuca said. “We wanted the event at one venue on the same day. Essex Sports Center was more than happy to assist us in hosting the event.”
In previous years, a similar event was run on the boys side between the Middlesex League and Catholic Conference, held at the O’Brien Rink in Woburn.
The Showcase will help promote girls hockey.
“Girls coaches are looking at alternative ways to promote girls high school hockey,” Pagliuca said. “We submitted a power seeding proposal to the MIAA Ice Hockey Committee which was rejected with no reason given, despite the fact that around 80% of coaches and athletic directors supported the proposal. We have looked at other alternative ways to promote girls hockey.”
One such event has been the Hingham Showcase, where several top programs participate during the final week of the regular season, each playing two games. This season, 12 teams will take part there, including Pagliuca’s St. Mary’s team.
During the ML vs CCL Showcase, there was a desire to highlight a charity that provides great resources to people in need around the region. The Joe Andruzzi Foundation (JAF) was selected. The Foundation, overseen by former New England Patriots player Andruzzi, is committed to providing assistance to patients of all ages throughout New England who have fallen on financial hardships as a result of a cancer diagnosis.
