Mass. Girls HS Hockey: Westwood ascends to D-II Top Spot

In 1972, two lifetime high school hockey fans started a weekly broadcast of Greater Boston high school games on WBOS-FM (92.9). The duo - Lance LoFaro and Darby Yaeger - called the nightly broadcasts "Hockey Night in Boston". As of late, HNIBnews - over 40 years running - has kept the scholastic hockey world on its feet with its widely-read website In addition to HNIBnews, Hockey Night in Boston runs, and also hosts summer tournaments showcasing the talents of scholastic hockey.

Despite being off for eight days, Westwood moves into the #1 spot in the HNIB News Mass. Girls Division II Top Ten, thanks to Wellesley’s tie Saturday against Dedham.


The Wolverines (3-0-1) will look to flex their muscles with three games this week, starting with tonight’s contest against Notre Dame of Hingham. Also on the docket are Medfield on Wednesday (1/8) and Franklin (1/11).


#2 Falmouth (2-1-0) looks ready to make a serious run, starting with Sandwich on Wednesday. The Clippers are at Ursuline on Saturday.


The 2-2 tie with Dedham drops Wellesley (5-0-1) to the #3 spot, but never count out the Red Raiders. A couple of Bay State League Herget games are up this week at Walpole (1/8) and with Norwood (1/11).


#4 Archbishop Williams (6-2-0) also pulled off a huge win against Division I power Arlington Catholic before falling, 4-2. The Cougars have an intriguing game Wednesday, hosting Shrewsbury.


Tewksbury/Methuen (5-0-0) moves up to #5 and remains unscathed to date. Wayland/Weston (1/8) and Concord-Carlisle (1/11) come to the Methuen High rink this week.


#6 Fontbonne‘s (2-3-0) schedule doesn’t get any easier. After Tuesday’s battle at Duxbury, the Ducks host Austin Prep on Thursday and are at Acton-Boxboro on Saturday, three Division I opponents.


By virtue of its 2-2 tie with Wellesley, Dedham (2-1-1) moves up to #7. The Marauders have a key tilt with #9 Norwood on Wednesday. and host Natick on Saturday.


Fresh off a huge 1-0 win over Woburn, #8 Winchester (5-1-0) is exuding confidence. The Sachems are at Lexington on Wednesday, and hope to continue their winning ways on Saturday against Reading.


Norwood (3-1-0) drops a few pegs after its loss to Milton. The Mustangs have a tough week with Dedham on Wednesday and the trip to Wellesley on Saturday.


New to the poll in the #10 spot is Whitman-Hanson/Pembroke (5-1-0). The Panthers have shown a propensity for scoring in the early-going and host Quincy/North Quincy on Wednesday.
