A much-anticipated matchup between two of the state’s top teams turned out to be a defensive battle, and when the dust settled, it would be second-seeded Woburn taking home the Middlesex League tournament championship.
The Tanners, who finished second in the Liberty Division during the regular season got a pair of goals from Mackenzie Russo, one early on, and the second into an empty net, as Woburn blanked top-seeded Arlington, 2-0, at the Stoneham Arena.
The play was evenly-matched throughout, with both teams enjoying time in the offensive zone. But, there weren’t many scoring opportunities for either side, as each team’s defensive crew did a great job.
Woburn’s win denied the Spy Ponders an unbeaten season. They came into the contest 10-0-2 overall having won the Liberty Division regular season title. The Tanners were 7-1-2 in the regular season and won three straight playoff games.
Arlington beat and tied the Tanners in the first two games of the season.
That goal stood up until the game’s final minute. With Arlington buzzing looking for the equalizer, Russo grabbed a fortuitous bounce of the puck off the boards and scaled a shot from inside her own blue line into the vacated cage to seal matters with just 33 seconds to play.
