Mass. Girls D1 Top 10
MIAA Division 1 state champion Shrewsbury (21-2-2) showed some real perseverance in its run to the title.
In the quarterfinals, the Colonials were down late to Hingham, before tying it, and then winning it in double overtime. In the semifinal game, Shrewsbury found itself down 2-0 after one period to Notre Dame before rallying for a 4-3 win.
The run culminated with the 4-1 win over top-seed St. Mary’s in Sunday’s final at TD Garden. The Colonials finish the year as the #1 team in the HNIB News Massachusetts Girls Division 1 Top 10.
St. Mary’s (25-2-0) had been ranked in the top spot starting in the pre-season, and all throughout the regular season. Despite the loss, the Spartans had an outstanding year.
#3 Notre Dame Academy (17-7-0) navigated an arduous schedule pretty well, reaching the semifinal round.
Hingham (17-6-2) finishes at #4. The Harborwomen came on strong down the stretch, and gave Shrewsbury all it could handle in a quarterfinal matchup.
Billerica/Chelmsford (11-12-1), unranked at the end of the regular season, ends up #5 after a nice tournament run that included wins over HPNA and previously unbeaten Winthrop before a loss to St. Mary’s in the semifinals.
