Mass. Girls D2 Top 10


As the season progresses, it is becoming quite apparent that the field in the upcoming MIAA Division 2 Girls state-wide tournament will be a highly competitive one. We have our latest HNIB News Massachusetts Girls D2 Top 10 here, but there are a handful of other teams that could easily be included.

At the top, #1 Duxbury (14-0-2) continues to win. The Dragons beat Hingham and shut out Hanover and Marshfield this week. Looking ahead, Duxbury is off until it hosts Whitman-Hanson/Silver Lake on Saturday.

Moving up to #2 is Algonquin/Hudson (11-1-2). The T-Hawks avenged their only loss of the season Saturday in a big way, downing Longmeadow 5-1. Two more tough games loom with Shrewsbury (Monday) and Pope Francis (Friday).

#3 Sandwich (13-3-0) had wins over Dennis-Yarmouth, Old Rochester and Martha’s Vineyard around a tough loss to Barnstable (2-1). The Lady Knights are at Falmouth Wednesday in a big rival game.

One of the hottest teams around is #4 Braintree (11-2-1). The Wamps have won eight straight games, including the last four via the shutout route. Framingham (Wednesday) and Weymouth (Saturday) dot the schedule this week.

Winchester (10-2-1) drops a bit to #5 after a week that saw a tie (Belmont, 2-2) and a loss to D1 power Arlington (3-0). The Red & Black face rival Woburn on Wednesday and travel to Lexington on Saturday.

A big mover this week is #6 Natick (9-5-2), up three spots after a three-win week, all shutouts. This week the Redhawks get Newton (Wednesday) and Brookline (Friday).

#7 Norwood‘s (12-1-1) unbeaten streak came to an end Saturday at the hands of Medfield (3-0). The Mustangs also were tied up by Westwood. Looking ahead, Norwood has Hopkinton/Dover-Sherborn (Wednesday) and Medway-Ashland (Saturday).

#8 Needham (7-3-4) had a split week, downing Weymouth (5-3) and falling to Braintree. The Rockets get ready for Milton (Wednesday) and Walpole (Saturday).

Woburn (9-3-2) is up a peg to #9 after wins over Reading (4-1) and Lexington (4-2). The Tanners get another crack at Winchester (Wednesday).

Back in the D2 Top 10 this week is #10 Canton (10-5-0). The Bulldogs had wins over King Philip (2-1) and Dennis-Yarmouth (5-2) and will play Lincoln-Sudbury on Friday.

TEAMS TO WATCH: Andover, King Philip, Falmouth, Malden Catholic, Medfield, Westwood, Watertown.
