Mass. Girls D1 Top 10
Hard to believe there is less than a week to go until the end of the regular season. Still, there are plenty of key games in the coming few days that could jumble the lastest MIAA power rankings.
#1 St. Mary’s (18-1-0) had a big win Saturday over HPNA (3-1). The Spartans have Billerica/Chelmsford (Monday) and then close out with a pair of games at the Hingham Showcase, facing Malden Catholic in the first round Tuesday.
#2 Winthrop (17-0-0) continues to roll. The Vikings, who have outscored their opposition 96-14 this year, can close out a perfect regular season on Tuesday against Beverly/Danvers. They are the only team in the state, boys or girls, that has not lost.
After a loss to D2 power Archbishop Williams, #3 Notre Dame Academy (12-5-0) picked up wins over Malden Catholic (completion of suspended game) and Acton-Boxboro. The Cougars also have three games this week, opening up with Braintree at the Hingham Showcase.
#4 Peabody/Lynnfield/North Reading (15-3-0) finished its league slate with a win Saturday over Marblehead. PLNR, who has lost only to St. Mary’s and Winthrop, faces Bishop Fenwick (Monday) and then HPNA (Wednesday).
A win over Acton-Boxboro clinched #5 Shrewsbury (14-2-2) a share of the MVC/Dual County Large crown. The Colonials head to the Newburyport Bank Classic and face off with #9 Pope Francis (12-5-2) Monday.
#6 HPNA (11-6-2) ends its regular season with the PLNR game.
#7 Methuen/Tewksbury (10-5-3) hosts the Brianna McCarthy Tournament this week, taking on Matignon in the opening round Monday.
Up a spot this week is #8 Hingham (12-5-2) which continues to play solid hockey. The Harborwomen will see Arlington (Tuesday) in its Hingham Showcase opener.
Pope Francis looks for a solid showing at the Newburyport Bank Classic. The Cardinals fell to the Cape Cod Furies Saturday (2-0).
Back in the rankings this week is #10 Bishop Feehan. The Shamrocks beat D2 #1 Duxbury this week, and also won Sunday against a good Malden Catholic squad. They are playing their best hockey of the season, a trend they hope to continue this week against King Philip (Monday) and the Cape Cod Furies (Wednesday).
