Mass. Girls D1 Top 10
Some exciting league tournament action highlighted the final week of the 2020-2021 MIAA season, a campaign that was limited and challenging for all those involved. Kudos to all that were able to make a season happen, in whatever form, for their players and programs.
A 3-2 win Saturday over previously unbeaten Matignon solidified St. Mary’s (15-2-3) in the top spot in this final HNIB News Massachusetts Girls Division 1 Top 10. The Spartans, who were able to get in 20 games this winter, also knocked off #3 Austin Prep (7-2-2) in a Catholic Central League Cup semifinal, the win the 300th in the coaching career of St. Mary’s bench boss Frank Pagliuca.
#2 Woburn (10-1-2) took home the Middlesex League Tournament, blanking #5 Arlington (10-1-2), 2-0, in Saturday’s title game. The Spy Ponders were the Liberty Division regular season champions.
#4 Duxbury (14-1-1) swept three opponents in the Patriot Cup Tournament, beating Pembroke, 3-0, in the final. The Dragons, who shut out their final five opponents, allowed goals in only five games this winter.
#6 Billerica/Chelmsford (10-1-0) outlasted rival Andover, 3-2, in the finals of the Merrimack Valley Conference Cup. B/C allowed just 11 goals all season.
#7 Peabody/Lynnfield/North Reading (12-1-0) won its third consecutive Northeastern Hockey League crown, closing the season on a 10-game winning streak.
Rounding out this final Top 10 are Dual County League squads #8 Lincoln-Sudbury (7-1-2) and #9 Waltham (7-1-0), and Central/West’s Shrewsbury (8-1-3) at #10.
