Coming up with weekly rankings is never an exact science. And the process is only exacerbated this winter with all that is going on. Some teams have had to pause their seasons in the early going, some had their starts delayed, and others have upcoming games impacted.
It must be hectic for area athletic directors and coaches, having to deal with sudden pauses, postponements and rescheduled games for all winter sports. Some such rescheduled games are against opponents who were not on the original schedule on a certain date.
Here is the latest HNIB News Massachusetts Girls Division 1 Top 10.
Austin Prep is off to a 2-0-1 start, the tie against preseason #2 St. Mary’s. The Cougars are scheduled to play Bishop Stang this week.
#2 Arlington (2-0-1) got a win and tie to open the season against Middlesex Liberty Division rival #4 Woburn (1-1-1). So far, both the Spy Ponders and Tanners’ seasons have been intact. Arlington gets Lexington (Monday) and Winchester (Wednesday). Woburn has Reading (Monday) and Lexington (Thursday).
#3 St Mary’s (1-1-1) has not played in two weeks and itching to get back into the swing of things with a Monday game against Archbishop Williams. The Spartans also have scheduled games Wednesday against Bishop Feehan and Saturday with Bishop Stang.
#5 Needham (3-0-0) and #6 Duxbury (5-0-0) have both been impressive to date. The Rockets won their third straight to start the season with a 5-2 win over Walpole where senior Maddie Ledbury scored all five goals. Needham is supposed to play rival Wellesley on Wednesday and Saturday.
The Dragons have been about as stingy as can be on defense, having allowed just one goal all season, that is a 3-1 win over Norwell. Freshman Anna McGinty has been solid in goal, and Ayla Abban has powered the offense. Duxbury looks ahead to Cohasset/Hanover (Wednesday) and Hingham (Saturday).
#7 Andover (3-0-0) has shown its explosive offense to date, ripping off three straight Merrimack Valley Conference wins and scoring 22 goals in the process. A big game looms Monday with new #9 Billerica/Chelmsford (2-0-0), which has a pair of shutouts to open the season.
#8 Waltham (3-0-0) is unbeaten in its first three games and has a pair of contests scheduled with Cambridge this week. New #10 Lincoln-Sudbury is off to a 3-0-1 start and will take on Boston Latin on Wednesday in the Wolfpack’s season opener.
