Mass. Girls D1 Top 10
Nothing new to report at the very top of this week’s HNIB News Massachusetts Girls Division 1 Top 10. In the bottom half of the rankings, there was some shuffling, and by the looks of things there should be for the remainder of the season.
#1 St. Mary’s (11-0-0) keeps rolling along, blanking a solid Andover team and then taking the Nan Rheault Tournament over the weekend, with wins over Martha’s Vineyard and Scituate. The Spartans host Newburyport Wednesday, then have a huge test Saturday with #3 Notre Dame of Hingham (5-2-0).
Despite falling to Duxbury, the Cougars will remain at #3 this week. Prior to facing St. Mary’s, NDA has Hingham Monday and Needham Wednesday.
In between, Shrewsbury (9-0-0) remains firmly entrenched at #2. They continue to prevail in close games, adding wins against #7 Methuen/Tewksbury (2-1) and Lincoln-Sudbury (3-2). The Colonials are home this week against Westford Academy (Wednesday) and Andover (Saturday.
Winthrop (9-0-0) climbs to #4 after a very impressive week that saw the Vikings beat Acton-Boxboro, Masconomet and Gloucester by a 20-2 margin. Winthrop, which has now outscored opponents by a 50-6 margin, hosts Beverly/Danvers Saturday.
Also up a spot is #5 Peabody/Lynnfield/North Reading (8-2-0). PLNR had wins over Bishop Fenwick and Medford and gets ready for Medford again Wednesday and Masconomet Friday in league play.
MVC/Dual County Large teams hold the next three spots, as they should continue to knock each other off down the stretch.
#6 Billerica/Chelmsford (6-3-0) fell to Medway/Ashland, but responded with wins over Acton-Boxboro and Westford Academy. Things won’t get any easier, with Andover (Monday) and HPNA (Sunday) on deck.
Methuen/Tewksbury (5-3-0) did have a big 1-0 win over HPNA Saturday and looks ahead to Masconomet (Monday), Waltham (Wednesday) and Acton-Boxboro (Saturday).
HPNA (6-3-1) holds the #8 spot. It did have a big win over Westford Academy. A crucial contest is on tap Monday morning with Lincoln-Sudbury.
#9 Arlington (7-2-0) drops after a week that saw the Spy Ponders beat Burlington, but suffer losses to both Winchester and Belmont. Arlington looks to right the ship this week against Reading Saturday.
New to this week’s rankings at 10 is Hingham (5-3-1). The Harborwomen swept three games this past week over Winchester, Marshfield and Hanover, and will be ready for Notre Dame Monday.
