An interesting week of action certainly tightens things up in this latest installment of the HNIB News Massachusetts Girls Division 1 Top 10.
Last week’s top team, Austin Prep, need a late rally to tie St. Mary’s 4-4 and then got beat Saturday by Matignon. St. Mary’s on the other hand, ripped off three wins after that tie, knocking off Norwell, Arlington Catholic and King Phillip.
And last week’s No. 2 ranked team – Arlington – needed a late goal to tie Reading (2-2) and then downed Winchester, 4-2.
For now, anyway, St. Mary’s (10-2-2) will assume the #1 spot. The Spartans do have a tussle on their hands scheduled for Monday vs. Notre Dame.
Austin Prep (6-1-2) will look to rebound when they face Arlington Catholic on Tuesday.
Arlington (5-0-2) will hold down the #3 spot. The Ponders face Reading again Wednesday and finish with a pair of games against a good Belmont team.
Woburn (5-1-1) holds firm at #4, its only decision an impressive 4-0 win over Belmont. The Tanners meet the Marauders again Wednesday.
#5 Duxbury (11-1-1) moves up a spot after shut out wins over Notre Dame (1-0) and Norwell (3-0). The Patriot League Cup is next up for the Green Dragons.
Also up a notch to #6 is Billerica/Chelmsford (6-1-0), which had wins over Central Catholic (7-1) and Methuen/Tewksbury (2-0). A huge game looms Monday with #8 Andover (6-1-1), which handed B/C its only loss so far. Andover also had a win over Central Catholic this week (6-3).
In between those two Merrimack Valley Conference teams is Needham (4-1-0) at #7. The Rockets split two games this week against league foe Milton. They are scheduled to see the Newton Co-op twice this week.
#9 Waltham (4-0-0) and #10 Lincoln-Sudbury (7-1-2) are scheduled to see each other twice this week as they ready for the Dual County League post-season action. The Warriors just finished four straight games against Acton-Boxboro with a 3-1 win, after falling to the Colonials 3-2 earlier in the week.
TEAMS TO WATCH: Winthrop, Belmont, Peabody/Lynnfield/North Reading, Acton-Boxboro
