With the MIAA’s new alignments kicking in this winter, some frequent customers in the D1 rankings over the past few years now reside in Division 2, opening the door for other teams.

Heading into the 2021-2022 season, Austin Prep gets the nod as the pre-season #1 team in the first HNIB News Massachusetts Girls Division 1 Top 10 of the season. The perennially strong Cougars should have a prolific offense and welcome in a few key additions to the club.

Austin’s Catholic Central rival – St. Mary’s Lynn – will start at #2. The Spartans won the CCL Cup last year and have a solid 1-2 scoring punch in Jenna Chaplain and Maggie Pierce.

#3 Notre Dame Academy moves up from Division 2 and should be highly-regarded. The Cougars have depth up and down the lineup, backboned by one of the state’s top netminders in Lily Prendergast.

Having lost just four games total the past two seasons, #4 Arlington is primed for another big year, led by reigning Liberty Division MVP Maddie Krepelka up front.

#5 Peabody/Lynnfield/North Reading has won the last three Northeastern Hockey League titles and returns a solid nucleus.

The second half of the Pre-season D1 Top 10 includes four teams from the rugged MVC/Dual County Large, including #6 Billerica/Chelmsford, #7 Shrewsbury, #9 Methuen/Tewksbury and #10 Acton-Boxboro. In between this quartet is the NHL’s Winthrop at #8.

Good luck to all the teams in 21-22 season.
