Mass. Girls D1 Top 10
Two of the state’s best teams met Saturday and battled each other for a full 45 minutes. With overtime looming, #1 St. Mary’s (13-0-0) got a goal from senior Maggie Pierce with 33.7 seconds left in regulation to take a 1-0 win over #3 Notre Dame Academy (7-3-0).
With the win, the Spartans continue their stay at the top of this week’s HNIB News Massachusetts Girls Division 1 Top 10. They face Billerica/Chelmsford Wednesday and have a showdown with D2 #2 Archbishop Williams scheduled on the road Saturday.
Notre Dame, which did beat Needham (6-1) and Hingham (1-0) this week, looks ahead to LaSalle Academy (Wednesday) and Boston Latin (Saturday).
In between, Shrewsbury (10-0-1) stays at #2, even after suffering its first blemish of the season in a 0-0 deadlock with D2 #4 Andover Saturday. The Colonials had a win over Westford Academy (5-0) and will see Acton-Boxboro (Wednesday) and HPNA (Saturday).
#4 Winthrop (10-0-0) returned to the ice Saturday and downed Beverly/Danvers (4-1). The Vikings are off until this coming Saturday when the face off with Shawsheen/Bedford.
Northeastern Hockey League rival Peabody/Lynnfield/North Reading (10-2-0) is right behind at #5 after dispatching Medford (6-0). This week, PLNR gets Gloucester (Wednesday) and Beverly/Danvers (Saturday).
HPNA (9-3-1) gets the #6 spot after Sunday’s 1-0 win over #9 Billerica/Chelmsford (6-5-0) in a typical MVC/Dual County Large game. They also beat Lincold-Sudbury (3-1) and Acton-Boxboro (5-0). The gauntlet continues this week with Andover (Wednesday) and Shrewsbury (Saturday) on the horizon.
#7 Methuen/Tewksbury (7-3-1) posted wins over Masconomet (4-0) and Acton-Boxboro (3-1) and a scoreless time with Waltham. Westford is up next on Wednesday.
#8 Arlington had a solid 3-0 win over Reading Saturday to improve to 8-2-0. The Spy Ponders will play Burlington (Wednesday) and Stoneham/Wilmington (Saturday) this week.
Billerica/Chelmsford drops to #9. B/C also fell to Andover 2-1 in another one-goal game. A key league game looms Saturday against Methuen/Tewksbury.
And new to this week’s Top 10 is #10 Pope Francis (7-3-1). The Cardinals ran off three wins this week, over Acton-Boxboro (6-1), Auburn (2-1) and Marblehead (2-0). They will get ready for Algonquin on Saturday.
