Mass. Girls D1 Top 10
The top teams in this week’s latest HNIB News Massachusetts Girls Division 1 Top 10 stay in place, but in many cases in wasn’t as easy as past weeks. Maybe the close games will be a harbinger of things to come in the post-season.
#1 St. Mary’s won two games to improve to 15-1-0. After blanking Arlington Catholic earlier in the week, the Spartans had their hands full with a determined Bishop Feehan squad Saturday, needing a goal with 16 seconds left in regulation for a 3-2 win. Matignon is up next on Wednesday.
#2 Winthrop (13-0-0) notched a key win mid-week with a 3-2 decision of #4 Peabody/Lynnfield/North Reading (13-3-0). On Saturday though, the Vikings escaped with a 2-1 OT win over Newburyport. Up next are Marblehead (Wednesday) and Medford (Saturday).
A power outage ended #3 Notre Dame Academy‘s game with Malden Catholic Friday night midway through the second period. It would have been the Cougars only action of the week. They hit the ice again on Wednesday (Sandwich) and then Saturday (Bishop Feehan).
PLNR did beat Shawsheen/Bedford on Saturday and is off until it meets Newburyport on Saturday.
#5 Shrewsbury (11-1-2) had a 6-0 win over Billerica/Chelmsford, and then Saturday played #6 Methuen/Tewksbury to a 1-1 standoff. The Colonials get Longmeadow (Wednesday) and Westford Academy (Saturday).
#6 Methuen/Tewksbury (8-4-2) fell to D2 power Andover earlier in the week and get a crack at #7 HPNA (10-5-1) on Wednesday. HPNA, with a depleted bench, fell 2-1 to Westford on Saturday.
Staying at #8 is Pope Francis (9-3-2) which downed Connecticut’s East Catholic (5-1) and had a 2-2 tie with Matignon. The Cardinals look ahead to two more Connecticut programs – Suffield Co-op (Monday) and Woodstock Academy (Wednesday) – and then Algonquin Saturday.
#9 Hingham (8-5-2) had a win over Plymouth 4-2) and then its game Saturday with Pembroke was postponed. The Harborwomen have Norwell (Wednesday) and Quincy/North Quincy (Saturday).
#10 Arlington (9-2-2) beat Melrose in its only game. The Spy Ponders look ahead to Lexington (Wednesday) and Winchester (Saturday).
