Hard to believe that the 2019-2020 season is entering its final full week of action. The heavies are all rounding into playoff shape. Only a few minor changes in this week’s HNIB News Massachusetts Girls Division 1 Top 10, as the 10 teams combined to go 20-1-2 this past week.

#1 Austin Prep (13-1-2) beat Longmeadow (4-1) for a second time, then had big league wins over Arlington Catholic and Archbishop Williams. The Cougars have an interesting week ahead, traveling to surging #10 Shrewsbury on Monday, playing a tough Matignon team Wednesday, and then the big one Saturday against #2 St. Mary’s.

St. Mary’s (13-0-3) ascends to the #2 spot this week after shutout wins over Matignon and St. Joseph Prep/Mt. Alvernia. The Spartans have allowed one goal or less in eight straight games. They will tune up for Saturday’s showdown with Archbishop Williams on Wednesday.

Saturday’s game is at Connery Rink with a 4 pm start. The two powerhouses tied 3-3 on opening night (Austin did score a goal in a 5-minute overtime session).

#3 Braintree (14-2-1) drops a spot after a split week. The Wamps lost a two-goal lead and fell to D2 #1 Wellesley (4-2) then edged Needham (3-2) Saturday. A Tuesday contest with Weymouth is their only action of the week.

#4 HPNA (15-0-2) has been battling sickness, but still picked up two more wins, a pair of low-scoring affairs over Westford (2-1) and Acton-Boxboro (2-0). They also have a huge rematch this week, hosting #7 Methuen/Tewksbury on Wednesday. A win clinches the MVC/Dual County Large crown. The teams tied 2-2 earlier in the season (M/T did score during the five-minute overtime).

#5 Arlington (11-1-4) and #6 Woburn (12-1-2) settled nothing when they played to a 1-1 draw Wednesday and remain tied atop the Middlesex League Liberty standings. The Spy Ponders also beat Lexington (2-1) while the Tanners rallied from a two-goal deficit to down Reading (7-3), a game that saw freshman Angelina DiGirolamo score four more times to reach the 30-goal plateau. Arlington closes out its league slate with Winchester (Wednesday) and #8 Belmont (Saturday). Woburn has Lexington (Wednesday) and Winchester (Saturday).

Methuen/Tewksbury (10-2-4) picked up wins over Acton-Boxboro (3-2) and Billerica/Chelmsford (3-1). After HPNA the Red Rangers get Westford Saturday.

Belmont (11-2-3) posted shutout wins over Lexington and Wincheser, both by 3-0 counts. Prior to Saturday’s biggie with Arlington, the Marauders see Medford/Malden (Monday) and Reading (Wednesday).

#9 Boston Latin (10-2-3) posted shutout wins over Concord-Carlisle (2-0) and Wayland/Weston (3-0). A rematch with Concord-Carlisle is on in a rare Sunday night matchup (5 pm), then huge games with Lincoln-Sudbury (Wednesday) and Waltham (Saturday) that will in effect decide the MVC/Dual County Small title.

#10 Shrewsbury won four games this past week to improve to 13-3-1, on a roll heading into the Austin Prep clash Monday, the Colonials only action of the week.

TEAMS TO WATCH: Waltham (10-2-5), Needham (10-4-2), Masconomet (9-4-3), Andover (9-4-3)
