Things are heating up in Massachusetts Girls Division 1 hockey. One win or loss can put a team in the Top 10, or just outside. And, things can easily change week-to-week.
There were no changes at the top of this week’s HNIB News Girls D1 Top 10, but there was some significant shifting elsewhere.
#1 Austin Prep (5-0-2 overall) stayed put at #1. The Cougars picked up wins over Matignon (3-1) and Notre Dame (4-0). They have an interesting tilt Monday with Hingham, still smarting from a Saturday loss to Duxbury.
#2 Braintree‘s perfect start is no more, as the Wamps (8-0-1) were fit to be tied Saturday by Needham (2-2). Braintree will have a battle with surging Natick (Wednesday) and takes on Weymouth (Saturday).
#3 St. Mary’s Lynn (5-0-2) played just once, a 5-0 shutout of St Joseph Prep in Catholic Central play. The Spartans also play just once this week, a Wednesday non-leaguer with Westford Academy.
#4 Arlington (5-1-1) knocked Lexington from the unbeaten ranks (2-1) and then had its game scheduled for Saturday postponed due to a power outage. The Ponders will be well-rested for Belmont on Wednesday in what is a key Middlesex Liberty clash.
Here comes the MVC/Dual County Large contingent, taking the next three spots this week.
Coming off an epic 2-2 tie Saturday, #5 Methuen/Tewksbury (4-1-3) and #6 HPNA (6-0-2) showed they are clicking on all cylinders. The Red Rangers, who did “win” Saturday’s game in OT, had big shutout wins over Needham and Masconomet and look ahead to Billerica/Chelmsford (Wednesday) and Westford Academy (Friday), two more tough league contests.
HPNA, which rallied Saturday with third period goals from Hannah Keating and Eliana Kane, also beat Acton-Boxboro. They also have two tough ones this week – Peabody/Lynnfield/North Reading on Wednesday and #7 Andover (5-1-3) on Saturday.
The Warriors ran off three straight W’s this week, downing Hanover NH, Westford and Acton-Boxboro. Things don’t get any easier with Masconomet on Wednesday prior to Saturday’s league showdown with HPNA.
New #8 Woburn (6-1-1) had a big week with convincing wins over Reading (8-2) and Lexington (7-1). Freshman sisters Lucia and Angelina DiGirolamo are off to big starts for the Tanners, who get Winchester Tuesday and Wakefield Friday.
Rounding out this week’s Top 10 are #9 Boston Latin (5-1-2), coming off a pair of 3-2 wins, and new #10 Needham (5-2-1), which tied Braintree Saturday.
TEAMS TO WATCH: Hingham (6-2-0), Longmeadow (6-1-3), Belmont (6-1-2), Duxbury (4-3-1)
