Hard to believe, but the 2019-2020 regular season is at the two-thirds pole. Teams now are clinching post-season berths, and zeroing on league championships.

And, there is a new #1 this week in the latest HNIB News Massachusetts Girls Division 1 Top 10. The distinction goes to Braintree, which improved to 12-0-1 after convincing wins over Milton and Newton.

#2 Austin Prep (8-1-2) drops a spot after losing its first game, a 3-1 decision to D2 #1 Wellesley. The Cougars did respond in a big way, downing Longmeadow 6-3 on Saturday.

Austin’s second spot in the rankings could be short-lived, however, as this coming Wednesday, the Cougars get the chance to knock off Braintree in a huge battle at Zapustas Rink (6 pm)

St. Mary’s (8-0-3) holds firm at #3 after a solid three-win week that saw the Spartans defeat Lexington, Arlington Catholic and Archbishop Williams. They look ahead to another three-game week, taking on Hingham (Monday), Bishop Fenwick (Wednesday) and Arlington Catholic again (Saturday).

#4 HPNA (11-0-2) rolls along, picking up three more wins as well this week, beating Reading (4-2) and earning shutout wins over Concord-Carlisle and Central Catholic. Beverly/Danvers is Monday’s opponent and then comes Billerica/Chelmsford on Saturday.

Methuen/Tewksbury (7-1-4) drops a spot to #5 after a couple of hard-fought games, a 3-2 win over Boston Latin and a 1-1 standoff with Waltham. The Red Rangers get Newton Co-op on Monday, and then a league rematch with Andover on Saturday.

#6 Arlington (8-1-3) had a big week, with wins over Winchester (2-1) and Burlington (4-1) and a tie with Longmeadow. The Spy Ponders have Stoneham/Melrose (Wednesday) and Reading (Saturday), needing one more point to clinch a playoff berth.

#7 Woburn (9-1-1), whose only loss this winter was to Arlington, returned to action with a convincing win over Watertown.  After taking on Wilmington Wednesday, the Tanners have a big one with #8 Belmont (8-1-3) on Saturday. Woburn has given Belmont its only loss to date this season, a 5-2 setback on New Year’s Day. The Marauders, whose game with Wakefield was postponed yesterday,  will be well-rested when they take on Burlington Wednesday.

#9 Boston Latin (6-2-3) followed that loss to M/T with a 3-1 verdict of Andover Saturday. The Wolfpack stays in-league this week with Cambridge (Wednesday) and Central Catholic (Saturday).

Returning to the Top 10 this week is #10 Shrewsbury (8-3-1). The Colonials knocked off Rhode Island kinpin LaSalle Academy 6-2 and played Masconomet to a 2-2 draw Saturday. A one-game week has St. Peter Marian on the docket Wednesday.

TEAMS TO WATCH: Needham (6-3-1), Masconomet (7-3-3), Longmeadow (6-3-4), Waltham (6-2-5)
