Mass. Girls D1 Top 10
The top two teams have flip-flopped in this week’s HNIB News Masschusetts Girls Division 1 Top 10.
Austin Prep (10-1-2) is back in the driver’s seat as they travelled to Zapustas Arena this past Wednesday and were able to knock off previous #1 and unbeaten Braintree in a 2-1 barnburner.
The Cougars, who beat St. Joseph Prep Saturday (8-0), swing right back into action Sunday afternoon with a rematch against Longmeadow at the Olympia Center. League foes Arlington Catholic (Wednesday) and Archbishop Williams (Saturday) loom this week.
It will be another big Wednesday this week for #2 Braintree (13-1-1). The Wamps will take on D2’s top-ranked team in Bay State League foe Wellesley (6pm, Zapustas). It will also be a big Saturday as Needham provides Saturday’s opposition.
#3 St. Mary’s (11-0-3) continues to cruise along, posting wins this week over Hingham (4-1), Bishop Fenwick (5-1) and Arlington Catholic (3-0). The Spartans take on Matignon (Wednesday) and St. Joseph Prep (Saturday).
#4 HPNA (13-0-2) holds serve as well after wins over Beverly/Danvers (9-1) and Billerica/Chelmsford (3-1). HPNA, which controls its own destiny in the MVC/Dual County Large race, faces Westford Academy (Thursday) and Acton-Boxboro (Saturday).
The Game of the Week will take place Wednesday when #5 Arlington (10-1-3) takes on #6 Woburn (11-1-1), the winner getting the upper hand for the Middlesex League Liberty Division title. The two teams are currently tied in league standings and feature some impressive freshman scorers in Arlington’s Maddie Krepelka and Woburn’s dynamic duo of Angelina and Lucia DiGirolamo.
The game is scheduled for 6pm at Woburn’s O’Brien Rink. The Spy Ponders took the first meeting, 5-1, in early January.
Methuen/Tewksbury (8-2-4) falls to #7 after Saturday’s 4-3 loss to Andover, despite a Jessica Driscoll hat trick. The Red Rangers stay in league with games against Acton-Boxboro (Wednesday) and Billerica/Chelmsford (Saturday).
Boston Latin (8-2-3), on the cusp of tournament qualification, jumps a spot to #8. The Wolfpack had wins over Cambridge (5-0) and Central Catholic (6-1) and are off until a Saturday matchup with Wayland/Weston.
#9 Belmont (9-2-3) fell a spot after Saturday’s 8-3 loss to Woburn. Both of the Marauders’ losses this year have been at the hands of the Tanners. Lexington (Wednesday) and Winchester (Saturday) are on the docket this week.
Shrewsbury (9-3-1) holds steady at #10. The Colonials knocked off St. Peter Marian in their only action of the week. They face Algonquin/Hudson (Monday), Woodstock Academy (Wednesday) and Leominster (Saturday).
