Mass. Girls D2 Poll: Top 3 begin to distance themselves from pack

With the week off, Notre Dame of Hingham (12-2-0) keeps the #1 ranking in this week’s HNIB News Mass. Girls D2 Top 10 poll. The Cougars are resting up for what looks like a competitive remainder to the regular season, starting with Shrewsbury (Tuesday) and Fontbonne (Thursday).

#2 Wellesley (11-1-0) surely made a statement Saturday in its first meeting of the season with Milton. The Red Raiders rolled to an 8-1 win to take control of the Bay State Herget Division. Wellesley will play Framingham (Wednesday) and Natick (Saturday). The Red Raiders have won 10 straight games.

#3 Tewksbury/Methuen (14-0-2) stays unbeaten. The Red Rangers blanked Cambridge (4-0) and then took  a 4-0 win over Boston Latin in a Super Bowl Sunday matinee. They are scheduled to face Waltham (Wednesday) and Concord-Carlisle (Saturday).

Girls-Festival-Ad-300x250Despite a Saturday loss to Reading, Winchester (10-5-0) moves up a slot to #4. The Sachems did post an impressive 4-1 win over Lexington earlier in the week. Belmont (Wednesday) and Arlington (Saturday) are next up on the docket.

#5 Fontbonne (9-6-1) seems to be getting things going as they prepare to face top-ranked Notre Dame on Thursday. The Ducks’ most recent wins were 8-3 over Weymouth and 3-1 over Ursuline. Following Notre Dame, the Ducks will see Archbishop Williams Saturday.

Make it 11 straight wins for #6 Burlington (11-3-0). The Lady Devils had league wins over Melrose (5-4) and Stoneham (3-1) to inch up the poll. This week, coach Marty Conley’s crew gets Wakefield (Wednesday) and Wilmington (Saturday).

#7 Milton (9-4-2) had been playing well before running into the Wellesley buzzsaw Saturday. The Wildcats has previously swamped a good Walpole team (8-3). They look to rebound with Ursuline (Tuesday), Brookline/Newton South (Wednesday) and Dedham (Saturday).

#8 Archbishop Williams (7-5-3) is in a bit of a rut. The Bishops fell to Austin Prep Saturday (4-0) and then lost by a 6-2 count to Longmeadow (Sunday). They don’t play again until Saturday’s encounter with Fontbonne, another tough game.

Matignon (13-0-4) remains solid at #9. The Warriors beat Wayland/Weston (7-1) and Bishop Fenwick (4-1) and also tied Leominster/St. Bernard’s (1-1), a game that saw senior Rose Sullivan reach the 100 career point plateau. Brookline/Newton South is next on Saturday.

And #10 Pembroke (11-2-1) had the week off, getting back into action Thursday against Bishop Stang.

Keep an eye on resurgent Falmouth (10-5-1), Medfield (10-2-1), Plymouth (10-3-1) and Shrewsbury (9-4-2).
