With the holidays now in the rear-view mirror, action will be ramping up as we enter the second week of January. This week’s HNIB News Massachusetts Girls D1 Top 10 sees little change, as the top teams continue to win.

There is one new entrant this week, with unbeaten Franklin (7-0-0) checking in at #10. Led by seniors Regan Patterson and Cassi Ronan, the Panthers are averaging five goals a game.

#1 Austin Prep is now 6-0-0 overall with victories over Wellesley (3-0) and Longmeadow (5-1). Right behind the Cougars is fellow Catholic Central League member – St. Mary’s, also 6-0 after a solid win over previously unbeaten Reading (5-1)

  • This Saturday, Austin Prep and St. Mary’s square off for their first of two regular season meetings at Essex Sports Center (8:10pm).

Both also play Wednesday, with the Cougars taking on Matignon, and the Spartans facing Peabody/Lynnfield/North Reading.

#3 Duxbury (7-0-1) saw its winning streak snapped after a 2-2 standoff with Hingham, but the Dragons responded in a big way, knocking off Plymouth 8-1. Duxbury is off until a Saturday date with Whitman-Hanson/Silver Lake.

#4 Andover (8-0-1) had another solid week with impressive wins over Masconomet (5-2) and Rhode Island’s LaSalle Academy (6-2). The Warriors have Beverly/Danvers Wednesday and a return matchup with Masco on Saturday.

Wins over Marblehead (9-1) and Acton-Boxboro (4-1) keep Methuen-Tewksbury (6-1-0) at #5. Senior Julie Masotta continues red-hot, now with 17 goals on the season after notching a pair on Saturday. The Red Rangers get a good Lincoln-Sudbury team Wednesday and Matignon on Saturday this week.

Arlington (5-1-0) moves up a peg to #6, returning to action with a 3-1 win over Woburn Saturday. Lexington (Wednesday) and Winchester (Saturday) are on this week’s docket.

#7 Reading (4-1-1) had the toughest week of the ranked teams, falling to St. Mary’s and then tying Winchester (2-2) on Saturday. The Rockets get Woburn (Monday) and Belmont (Saturday).

#8 Braintree (5-2-0) and #9 Needham (5-0-1) will meet this Saturday (4:40pm, Zapustas) in a key game involving Bay State League clubs.

KEEP AN EYE ON: Shrewsbury (3-1-3), Peabody/Lynnfield/North Reading (6-1-1), Masconomet (3-2-2), Lincoln-Sudbury (7-2-0), Winthrop (6-2-0).
