Big games dot the landscape for the upcoming week for many of Division 1’s top clubs, and those battles will be a precursor of some pretty hefty battles awaiting the final week of the regular season as well.

Reading (14-1-0) moved into the HNIB News Mass. Girls Division I poll’s #1 spot last week and the Rockets seem to enjoy the view, rolling to three wins this week over Lexington (6-2), Arlington (4-1) and Melrose (5-0).

It is a big week for Reading, with Winchester on Wednesday and Woburn on Saturday. In between, a big non-league war with Acton-Boxboro on Thursday.

Just as impressive is #2 Barnstable (10-0-4). The Red Raiders won Saturday’s big showdown with Duxbury (2-0) and also beat Braintree (8-1) and Hingham (4-1). This week, coach Peter Nugnes club gets Dennis-Yarmouth on Wednesday, a return engagement with Falmouth (Friday) and an interesting non-league game Saturday with Rhode Island heavy LaSalle.

#3 Arlington Catholic (12-2-1) tied Austin Prep (1-1) in the first of their two meetings (the second is upcoming this Saturday), and then beat Connecticut HS power East Catholic (3-0) on Saturday. The Cougars have Hingham scheduled for Monday (weather permitting) and face league foe Archbishop Williams (Wednesday) before seeing Austin Prep again.

Despite the loss to Barnstable, Duxbury (11-3-1) treads water at #4. The Dragons have round two with Falmouth on Wednesday, and then play Sandwich on Saturday.

Andover (10-4-2) sneaks up to #5. The Golden Warriors did fall to Chelmsford (2-1) but came back with a 2-0 verdict of Billerica. They stay with league play this week against Westford Academy (Wednesday) and Central Catholic (Saturday).

#6 Austin Prep (10-2-2) scored only one goal this week, tying Arlington Catholic (1-1) and falling Saturday to Archbiship Williams (1-0). Before Saturday’s return battle with AC, the Cougars get Wakefield on Thursday. They also are scheduled to play Hingham on Sunday.

Acton-Boxboro (11-2-2) check in at #7. The Colonials slipped past Westford (3-2) and were tied Saturday by Chelmsford (3-3). Central Catholic is on the docket for Tuesday ahead of the Reading matchup, and Billerica provides Saturday’s opposition.

#8 Watertown/Belmont (13-3-1) notched two more impressive wins in victories over Burlington (6-2) and Stoneham (7-2). A three-game week shows Wilmington (Wednesday), Medford (Thursday) and Melrose (Saturday).

Chelmsford (9-2-3) moves up a slug to #9 after tying A-B Saturday (3-3). The Lions also picked up the big win over Andover. Four games this week for Chelmsford: Shawsheen (Monday), Billerica (Wednesday), Leominster/St. Bernard’s (Friday) and Westford Academy (Saturday).

A huge tilt looms Tuesday with Winthrop/Lynn in a game that should decide the Northeastern Hockey League title. Peabody is Friday’s oppponent.
