Mass. Girls Division I Poll
There was a little movement in this latest edition of the HNIB News Mass. Girls D1 Top 10 poll.
Not at the top, though. #1 Arlington Catholic (12-0-1) won the big showdown with #2 Austin Prep (10-1-1) by a 2-0 count, and followed that with a 3-1 league win over Archbishop Williams Saturday. The AC Cougars get Beverly/Danvers on Wednesday, and then CCL foe St. Mary’s at home Saturday.
The Austin Cougars rebounded from the AC loss with a solid 5-1 verdict of six-time New Hampshire state champion Hanover on Saturday. Prep is looking to build off that win this week with games against Westwood (Wednesday) and Archbishop Williams (Saturday).
A pair of shutout wins over Westford Academy (3-0) and Central Catholic (5-0) allows Billerica (11-2-2) to sneak up a rung to #3. The Indians host Andover (Wednesday) and Chelmsford (Saturday) this week.
#4 Duxbury (9-1-2) had to settle for a 1-1 tie with stubborn Canton in its first game in 12 days on Saturday. The Dragon stay in-league this week with tilts against Barnstable (Wednesday) and Falmouth (Saturday).
Woburn (12-3-0) sits at #5. The Tanners were beaten Saturday by rival Winchester (5-4) after knocking off Wakefield (5-2) earlier in the week. Woburn stays at home this week against Belmont (Wednesday) and Arlington (Saturday).
Posting book-end 3-1 wins over Norwood and Framingham helped move Needham (11-1-2) up to #6. The Rockets will get ready for Weymouth (Wednesday) and Braintree (Saturday), both at Babson College.
#7 Hingham (11-3-1) officially qualified for the post-season with a 2-2 standoff with Canton and a 4-0 shutout win over Sandwich in league play this past week. The Harborwomen look ahead to Canton again (Tuesday) and then Barnstable (Saturday).
#8 Haverhill/Pentucket/North Andover (9-1-5) continues to play close games. HPNA tied Waltham (1-1), then rallied from a two-goal, third period deficit to edge Concord-Carlisle. Coach Gary Kane’s club will play Boston Latin (Wednesday) and Wayland/Weston (Saturday).
It was a split this week for #9 Beverly/Danvers (11-4-0) with a win over Medford (5-1) and a loss to St Mary’s (3-1). The Panthers will have their hands full Wednesday with top-ranked Arlington Catholic, and also play Marblehead on Saturday.
Lexington (10-3-0) is back in the top ten. The Minutemen split 2-1 games, losing to Burlington and then knocking off Reading by the same score. They have Winchester (Tuesday) and Belmont (Saturday).
Teams to keep an eye on: Arlington (9-3-0), Reading (9-5-0), Westford Academy (7-3-4), Acton-Boxboro (7-4-2), Quincy/North Quincy (11-2-3).
