Mass. Girls D-1 Tourney: Austin Prep takes down Reading

– Despite being outshot by a wide margin, #10-seed Austin Prep was able to slip past host Reading, 3-2, and move on to the quarterfinal round. Caty Flagg was outstanding in goal for the Cougars, while eighth-grade forward Olivia Finocchairo scored a pair of goals, including the game winner. Maddie Ricci notched Austin’s first goal. Tori Grimmer and Madison Leach had goals for Reading, which finished the season at 14-4-3.

– Second-seeded Beverly/Danvers had another exciting game, winning a first round matchup with Hingham, 3-2, on a goal by eighth-grader Julia Nearis with 37 seconds left in regulation. The Panthers also got goals from Nicole Woods and Rachel Trocchi. They will play Austin Prep in a quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday night at Stoneham.

– Top-seeded Acton-Boxboro survived an upset bid from Billerica, defeating its Merrimack Valley/DCL foe Billerica, 2-0. Annie Messuri had a first period goal for the Colonials, while Olivia Keefe added the other.


– Next up for A-B is eighth-seeded Barnstable in a quarterfinal battle on Wednesday at Stoneham. The Red Raiders slipped past #9 Woburn, 1-0. Lindsay Phelan had the game’s only goal, coming in the first minute of the contest.


– Third-seeded Arlington Catholic was impressive yet again, opening up its post-season with a 7-2 smackdown of Westford Academy. Scoring ace Adrieanna Rossini led the attack with a hat trick, while Jackie Sindoris, Mickey McLaughlin, Alyson Cunningham and Nicole Amato all had goals for the Cougars.

– Taking on Arlington Catholic in a quarterfinal game on Tuesday will be sixth-seeded Winthrop/Lynn, which eliminated Braintree, 4-1, in a first-round game. Breakaway goals by eighth-graders Emma English (shorthanded) and Savannah Norcross gave Winthrop/Lynn an early 2-0 lead. Caroline McKinnon had the other two goals for the winners. while Braintree’s goal came from Haley Payne.  Gretchen Howard had 26 saves. “Braintree was a very tough team, and they skated well, but we love to play a tough brand of hockey, and we work really hard,” said Winthrop/Lynn coach Butch Martucci.

– Moving on to face #5 Duxbury in the quarterfinal round Wednesday at Stoneham will be fourth-seeded Watertown/Belmont, which held off Andover this afternoon, 3-2. Erin McLaughlin had a pair of goals to lead the attack. Kendall Brown had Watertown/Belmont’s first goal from the point. Emily Loprete registered a pair of assists. Veronica Alois had both goals for Andover.
