Pre-season No. 8 Arlington Catholic has shown itself to be comfortable on the road in the early going. The Cougars, who play five of their first six games away from Ed Burns Arena, improved to 2-0 in Catholic Central Large play with a 3-1 decision of St. Mary’s at Connery Rink in Lynn.

“I like the chemistry of this team early in the season. They have really bought into the system and what we’re doing and they’re all very supportive of each other,” said veteran coach Dan Shine.

The Cougars pounced early in this one as Ryan Spagnoli deposited a rebound past St. Mary’s goalie Bailey MacBurnie (31 saves) at 1:27 into the game, assisted by Ryan Tierney and Jason Smith. The Spartans tied it on Jordan Manthorne’s goal at 5:53 of the first but Bernie McGovern notched the game-winner with 2:10 left in the period, assisted by Aaron Cooke and Jon-Luke Dee.

Ryan Smith tacked on an insurance goal with 2:20 left in the second period with McGovern and Andrew Somerville picking up the assists. St. Mary’s applied sustained pressure in the latter half of the third period but couldn’t dent senior goalie John Richard, who finished with 21 saves.

Next up for AC is the semifinal round of the Winter Classic Showcase next Monday at Billerica. The Cougars take on pre-season No. 12 Reading — a 6-1 winner against pre-season No. 10 and two-time defending Div. 1 State Champion Burlington last night —  at 5:45 . Billerica and Andover square off at 7:45. The consolation and championship games will be played Dec. 30.
