We thought back in the preseason that Massachusetts Division 2 boys hockey would be tough to predict this season. So far, barely two weeks into the season, that has proven true.

The first in-season HNIB News Mass. D2 Boys Top 15 is remarkably different looking than the pre-season rankings. A host of teams have dropped. A host of teams have climbed. Some teams have dropped out of the poll, while a handful of others have played their way in.

Medway (3-1-1) moves into the top position this week. The Mustangs have knocked off TVL rivals Medfield and Westwood so far, with their only loss to D1 Bridgewater-Raynham. Medway played to a 1-1 tie with RI’s Ponaganset HS on Monday and will take on Barrington (RI) Wednesday at the Burrillville Hockey Winter Classic.

Defending D2 North champ Lincoln-Sudbury (3-1-0) climbs all the way up to #2, even with a non-league loss to Norwell in its last outing. The Warriors have beaten Haverhill, Concord-Carlisle and D1 Winchester to date, and have a league game Wednesday against Methuen.

#3 Scituate (3-1-0)  and #4 Medfield (2-2-0) will square off tonight (Tuesday) in the first round of the Hillies Christmas Tournament in Haverhill.

#5 North Attleboro (2-1-o) jumps up to #5 with solid early-season wins over Bishop Feehan and Dedham. The Red Rocketeers did fall to Rhode Island power Burrillville on Monday and will take on North Smithfield (RI) on Wednesday.

Another big move is Westwood (3-1-0). The Wolverines stand at #6. Coming off a big win over Canton, Westwood hosts Pembroke on Wednesday.

#7 North Reading (3-0-0) has started fast, allowing just one goal in three wins, including a victory over Winthrop at the Kasabuski Christmas Classic, where they were scheduled to face D1 Melrose in the final game Tuesday.

Winthrop (4-1-0) moves up to #8, fresh off a convincing 10-2 win over Peabody in the Kasabuski consolation game this morning.  The Vikings travel to Somerville for a Monday night matchup.

#9 Canton (1-2-0) has taken a bit to get untracked in the new season, breaking into the win column with a victory over Bishop Feehan. The Bulldogs take on Coyle Cassidy in the first round of the Jim Gormley Cup on Wednesday at Gallo Arena.

Also at 1-2 is #10 Stoneham. The Spartans host the Stoneham Holiday Classic starting Wednesday, taking on Somerville in a first round tilt.

Rounding out the top 15 are #11 Lowell Catholic (2-0-1), #12 Danvers (3-1-1), #13 Coyle Cassidy (2-1-0), #14 Bishop Feehan (2-2-0) and #15 North Andover (2-1-2).
