Mass. Girls Division I Poll
The much anticipated first meeting of the season between powers Arlington Catholic and Austin Prep, the top two teams in the HNIB News Mass. Girls D1 Poll, all season long, is scheduled for Tuesday night at Stoneham Arena (8pm). It should be a defensive battle, as AC has allowed just five goals in 11 games, Austin five in 10 games.
We will leave the two as they were in this week’s poll, even with AC’s 1-1 tie Saturday with Fontbonne. The Cougars (10-0-1) also beat Billerica (3-1) and Andover (3-0).
Austin Prep (9-0-1) swept through Archbishop Williams (2-1), Beverly/Danvers (5-1) and then made the trek Saturday to Connecticut to face East Catholic, the team that tied AP earlier this year, and came home with a 3-1 win.
It should be a great game Tuesday night. For those wondering, the two Catholic Central League rivals will meet again on February 20th.
#3 Duxbury (9-1-1) keeps plugging along. Snow wiped out Saturday’s scheduled game with Hingham. The Dragons did knock off Marshfield (3-0). Duxbury gets Canton on Saturday.
#5 Woburn (11-2-0) fell victim to Watertown (3-2) but rebounded Saturday with a 3-1 win over Melrose. The Tanners this week will see Wakefield (Wednesday) and Winchester (Saturday).
Three solid wins over Masconomet (8-0), Brookline/Newton South (3-1) and Milton (8-3) propel Needham (9-1-2) up to #6 this week. The Rockets will face Norwood (Wednesday) and Framingham (Saturday).
#7 Acton-Boxboro (7-3-1) seems to have found its offense. After losing to Andover (3-2), the Colonials have wins over Waltham (6-0) and Wayland/Weston (12-1). They close out the month with two tough games – Andover again on Wednesday, and Westford Academy on Saturday.
#8 Beverly/Danvers (10-3-0) split this week, losing that game to Austin Prep, but coming back Saturday with a 7-2 verdict of Masconomet. The Panthers will take on St. Mary’s (Wednesday) and league foe Medford (Saturday).
#9 Hingham (10-3-0) lost to D2’s top club, Notre Dame (5-0) in the Hingham Cup, then knocked off Westwood (3-1). Canton (Wednesday) and Sandwich (Saturday) are this week’s opponents.
Low-scoring, tight games continue to be the motus operandi for #10 Haverhill/Pentucket/North Andover (8-1-4). HPNA sandwiched a pair of 0-0 ties with Chelmsford and Lincoln-Sudbury around a 2-1 win over Westford Academy. This week’s schedule sees Waltham (Wednesday) and Concord-Carlisle (Saturday). Senior goalie Michaela Kane has six shutouts this season.
Middlesex League clubs Lexington (9-2-0) and Reading (8-4-0) are just on the outside and looking to get into the Top 10 next week.
